Family details

From various sources it appears that there were four sons: Hastings Nathaniel, William, Charles John and Henry Johnson. Not John Charles: the heraldic reference may have a confusion with the uncle John Charles Middleton. Names of daughters given: Frances Anne, Emily, Louisa, Harriet Anne currently in the article, and Sophia, Augusta not accounted for.

Paula Downer writing local history in Westender gives Henry Johnson (1790), Charles John (1791), Louisa Anne (1796) as children born in the parish of South Stoneham. Charles married Eliza Carpenter, and had a share in a Jamaican estate (1840s). Then in 1843 on the Midanbury estate "which was then part of Bitterne Manor". Nathaniel effectively founded Midanbury.

Henry Johnson Middleton and Charles John Middleton both appear in Bengal Civil Service lists [1] with seniority 1806, which if Charles John were born 1791 makes him a bit young, but not impossibly I suppose, to be on the books then. Henry Johnson seems to have returned to Europe in 1828. Downer says "Henry and Charles covered various roles of jurisdiction at District level in the northern half of India, both staying until 1836 having completed 25 years from which time they could collect their pension." Well, according to [3] Charles Tucker 1789-1851, who looks right[4], married Charlotte Middleton 1782-1837. And an MI confirms the name, and date of death.[5] Charles Matthews (talk) 11:39, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

John Charles Middleton

John Charles Middleton "of Weybridge" is the description of the brother (1755-1826 AFAIK) of Nathaniel, given in the Rugby School entry for Frederick Graeme Middleton (d:Q102440775), in Rugby School Register: From April 1675 to April 1842 (1901). That is enough to conclude that the heraldic source has slipped up here. Independently we can see that JCM of Weybridge was subscriber to the Bibliotheca Heraldica Magnae Britanniae of Thomas Moule c.1822, so a heraldry fan.

Not anyway the brother of Henry Johnson Middleton, who by all accounts is Charles John Middleton. Charles Matthews (talk) 18:56, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Charles John Middleton

Thought to have married Eliza Carpenter. She remarried, to General Roderick Macneil. A notice [6] from 1858 describes "Eliza, widow of Chas. J. Middleton, esq., of Midanbury-house, Hants, and dau. of the late Gen. George Carpenter (East India Company), of the H.E.I.C.S." George Carpenter died in 1855.[7]

Eliza Middleton, a widow, was the plaintiff of a chancery case of 1847, defendants "Henry Johnson Middleton, Charles Edward Jermingham [sic] (abroad), Frederick Graeme Middleton, William Stephens, George Carpenter and John Middleton (deleted). Amended by order 1847. Henry Ochterlong Middleton and Mary Ann Ochterlong Middleton added defendants."

George Carpenter is identified with d:Q76270415 by the 1823 marriage of his daughter Jane to Henry Ricketts (1802–1886).[8] [9] gives a death date of 1844 for Charles John Middleton. It says George Carpenter had four children in all, the other daughter being Mary who married Stewart Paxton. According to [10], Paxton was a son of William Paxton (British businessman). "Charles John Middleton, Esq. late of the Bengal Civil Service", newspaper death reports January 1844. Death date given 8 January.[11] He appears as an 1806/7 BCS appointment, with Henry John Middleton.[12]
