If known, his birth date and death date (or alive status) would be useful additions; biographies are categorized based on this information.--Srleffler 17:41, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It seems his birth date has been added, presumably he is still alive.Stickymatch (talk) 01:20, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sometime in the thirteen years since I posted that suggestion, someone added the missing information.--Srleffler (talk) 22:17, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What did he do?

[edit]

What exactly did Kapany discover in 1952? The claim that he "conducted studies that led to the invention of optical fibre" is not true as written, since unclad optical fibers were used for imaging by Heinrich Lamm two decades earlier. The article needs to be clear about what exactly Kapany's contribution was, and needs to provide a specific reference for that claim.

Overall, this article contains a lot of praise for Kapany as the "Father of Fiber Optics", but doesn't provide nearly enough detail on what his contributions to the field actually were. Besides the inaccurate claim above, I read that "His research and inventions have encompassed fibre-optics communications, lasers, biomedical instrumentation, solar energy and pollution monitoring." and "He has over one hundred patents". That's great, but the article does not say what any of those inventions were, nor what new discoveries came from his research. The only actual achievement in fiber optics that is mentioned in the article is his coining of the term "fiber optics". I suspect the article is just not doing this man's work justice.--Srleffler (talk) 16:39, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I found the answer to my question about his 1952 discovery, and updated the article. The article still needs much more specific information about his later work, though.--Srleffler (talk) 20:10, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Father of fiber optics" removed

[edit]

The "father of fiber optics" title associated with Kapany only exist in non-scholarly sources. The title for him is not widely used around the world. The use of the phrase often originates in India (most of it is recent) and very rarely used outside India (that too only by non-experts like journalist). This title is not well-established like, say, the "father of atomic bomb" used for Oppenheimer. I have removed it from the lead. ChandlerMinh (talk) 09:57, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
