Start of splinter article
[edit]I splinter off the wine section from the main Napa County article because there is quite a bit of wine specific info that can be added (such as history) that would overwhelm the main article on the county. I copied the lead paragraph from the article for now but I can see it being rewritten as this article grows. Agne 01:25, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Tremendous work on the article
[edit]It was splintered less then a week ago and it has already taken bloom into a really nice article. Great work! However, it does need a healthy dose of references and in-line cites. (I'll see what I can help with in a few days). I also think we need to remove the list of Napa Wineries. We may want to make it a separate article List of Napa Valley Wineries or limit the list in the article to only those with a Wikipedia page. Better still would be a category. Agne 21:26, 8 November 2006
Moved from article
[edit]The list has gotten huge and is becoming a burden on the article. At its worse, it is borderline spam and POV advertising for the wineries listed. By its very nature of being incomplete, you are expressing a POV in the wineries that are included versus those that are excluded. Secondly, the notability of some of these wineries are questionable--especially for the ones that don't even have their own wikipedia article. I would strongly encourage the creation as category that could be attached to the wikipedia article of this page and of the wineries or at the very least, a list that can be linked to. Title of article
[edit]I think the title of the article should be changed to Napa Valley AVA (making Napa Valley (wine) a redirect) in order to be more consistent with the naming conventions of the other American Viticultural Areas in Wikipedia. Thoughts?--Kharker 19:44, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- I would agree. It was originally placed at Napa Valley (wine) since it cover items beyond just the single AVA. I can sort of see it acting in a similar function as Sonoma County AVA with a small summary and then link to the 15 other sub-AVAs in Napa Valley. AgneCheese/Wine 20:53, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
renaming a mistake?
[edit]Since it was renamed, this article has created confusion between the Napa Valley AVA and the county of Napa. From my reading of the CFR, it looks like the "Napa Valley AVA" excludes portions of Napa County lying north of Lake Berryessa. It's a minor distinction, but I think one worth making. Stepheng3 (talk) 18:52, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- I think there should be an article for every American Viticultural Area, and the Napa Valley AVA is the most prestigious, most visited, and most economically important of all the AVAs, so there clearly needs to be an article for it. When we moved the article title, I spent significant time going through the What Links Here listings and fixed links in like 100 articles to make sure that those referencing Napa Valley as a wine region were pointing to the Napa Valley AVA article and those referring to Napa Valley as a geographical area or otherwise pointed to the Napa County, California article. If there are really some wine topics related to the county that need covering but are not related to the AVA, then we could create a Napa County (wine) article that covers just those topics and make sure there are appropriate {{Distinguish}} tags in the articles to keep people from going astray.--Kharker (talk) 15:53, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I agree there should be an article for every AVA. In the process of cleaning up the "Sonoma County AVA" mess, I ran into a few articles in which "Napa Valley AVA" was apparently used as a synonym for "Napa County", and that's the cause of my concern. For instance, the List of wine-producing regions article lists Mendocino County as one area, but for Napa it has "Napa County (Napa Valley)", which gives the impression that the two terms are synonymous. I don't know for certain that wine grapes are grown in Napa County north of Lake Berryessa, but I wouldn't be surprised. I would feel more comfortable if there were a Napa County wine article analogous to the Sonoma County wine one. That would help maintain the distiction. Thanks again. Stepheng3 (talk) 02:36, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- I just created a Napa County wine article.--Kharker (talk) 23:13, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Napa Valley AVA → Napa Valley – I believe the wine region is the primary topic for the term "Napa Valley", not the geographic subdivision where that currently redirects (Napa County, California). The wine region is the only reason Napa Valley is known outside California and is what the vast majority of readers will be looking for when they type in "Napa Valley" in our search bar or Google. Jenks24 (talk) 06:32, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. The name of the wine region is derived from the geographic region. Given the potential for confusion, it is unhelpful to make the derived term primary. To minimise confusion and misuse, Napa Valley should be a dab page. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:19, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose per BHG, instead convert it to a dab page -- 70.51.46.39 (talk) 02:26, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

@BrownHairedGirl: mind doing the conversion into a dab page? -- 70.51.46.39 (talk) 04:49, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
