Singapuram a Tamil word

Singapore is not a Sanskrit word. It’s purely a Tamil word. ‘சிங்க புரம்’ means lion city. Kindly change it. Simha is not even close to singam. தமிழ்உத்திராடம் (talk) 08:21, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

As you can see here [1], all the different versions of names for lion listed (including Tamil) came from Sanskrit. Hzh (talk) 08:35, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Why is Template:Infobox Chinese used?

Why is Template:Infobox Chinese used? The name "Singapore" is an English name of Malay/Sanskrit origins. It isn't a Chinese name, which is what that infobox is supposed to be used for. Yes, there is an official Chinese translation for the English name of Singapore, just as there is one for its other non-English official languages (Malay and Tamil). But the current infobox seems to over-emphasize the Chinese translation of Singapore, giving the readers the false impression that it is a name of Chinese origin. (adding on) In particular, the prominently displayed "新加坡" image, with the caption: "'Singapore' in Chinese characters", is misleading. It gives the impression that "新加坡" is the original name that "Singapore" is derived from, rather than the other way around. Not to mention that "新加坡" is repeated again directly below that in the "Chinese name" field. An infobox image for a name article is unnecessary anyway, and if there is one, it would make more sense for it to be of the original Malay/Sanskrit name that "Singapore" is derived from. Based on this reasoning, I've WP:BOLDLY removed the "新加坡" image from the infobox. Bennv123 (talk) 16:01, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Looking through the article history, it seems that image has been added and removed a few times. Removal seems right to me, per your reasoning. Not sure the traditional characters should stay either. CMD (talk) 02:15, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Not sure the traditional characters should stay either. Agree; it isn't the official Mandarin script that Singapore uses. For that matter, the infobox also includes transcriptions of "Singapore" in other Chinese language variants (Wu, Gan, Hakka, Cantonese etc...). That's just overkill and WP:UNDUE. None of these other Chinese languages are official languages in Singapore, nor do they have anything to do with the origins of the "Singapore" name. There are many other Malay and Indian language variants too, but the infobox rightly doesn't have a laundry list of "Singapore" transcribed in these languages.
