Special HTML formatting looks out of place (span style etc.)

WIth this edit I removed some special HTML formatting of the two lead paragraphs. This might suit other scientific publications but is hardly ever used on Wikipedia. I suggest that similar formatting of some of the paragraphs below should also be taken out.
