In the recent years, a new wave of popular music changed the Bangla music scene. Songs by Azam Khan (singer), Fakir Alamgir are placing the music of the people, for the people and by the people.

What exactly do you think would make sense? How would you define Music of a country without naming some of the famous singers? Ragib

I have no problem with mentioning singers, and even those two particular singers. The way these two sentences are worded does not make sense. All I can grok is that Azam Khan and Fakir Alamgir are people related to the music industry, and that the Bangla music scene has recently had some popular music. Tuf-Kat 09:10, Dec 17, 2004 (UTC)

added material to almost all the sections

hi,

thanks to whoever created this page. i found the page on bengali music pretty disappointing. it lacks material and is mostly full of indian influence on bengali music, when, arguably, in reality, it's somewhat the other way round.

the page needs some related work... eg.

1. pictures of bangladeshi instruments (a different page would be great but after 4 hours of research and typing.. i give up =)) 2. pictures of singers 3. a better description of the genres 4. addition of singers i forgot 5. music in 80's and 90's particularly band music

Since this page is on Bangladeshi music, doesn't it make more sense to transliterate based on the Bangla pronunciation? I'm in a little doubt myself, because most other wikipedia pages seem to use transliteration based on Hindi or Sanskrit pronunciation.

examples:

Rabindra songeet instead of Rabindra sangeet (the name remains unchanged since that's how it appears more commonly) Adhunik songeet instead of Adhunik sangeet

The problem is most pronounced with "au" and "o". My reasoning to prefer "o" to represent "au" comes from the fact that, when in doubt, non South-Asians pronounce a as in actor. In fact this whole problem popped up with Indian English, which is unknown to foreigners (and Hindi speakers can't pronounce "au" in any case).

Any ideas on this?

The problem is that in most "deshi" spellings, "Sangeet" has become close to standardized. If you look at Bangladeshi English News Papers, you'd see that the "Sangeet" spelling is mostly used instead of "Songeet" (as I said, mostly). If you think we can override that, then the proposed re-spelling is better and I'd opt for that definitely.

It can be overridden if all wikipedians who are currently working on Bangla documents agree on it. Is there a community specifically for them? We need to create a standard transliteration scheme. I could work on one, but I will need your help to get this to all the rest. For now, let's use a when that's the "common case" and let's opt for o for any spelling that doesn't have a "common case", as yet. Of course, there is little to be done about spellings of names.

Appropriate adjective

During addition of my material, I exclusively used the word Bangla to mean Bengali. I have lately consulted the three "gospels" of english spelling =), and yes, I'm wrong :(. English uses a transliterated Hindi word Bangali, according to Webster. Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries give similar definitions. While as a Bangali, I clearly know this is wrong and I should be infuriated, well, I am not the one making English vocab decisions. I will fix all the adjectives I have used. This may take a while. But in recent years, the word Bangla is becoming more commonly used. (example, http://www.nongnu.org/freebangfont). In almost all Bangla news papers use it.Just to give a better example please visit Voice of America Bangla service. So, I not only think that Bangla is the proper usage/spelling, but also that you should replace wherever you see Bengali which is as obsolete as Dacca. --Ragib 07:45, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Bangla, the language, is a name. A name can be changed as and when a group of people prefer, eg Calcutta was changed to Kolkata and Madras was changed to Chennai. However, as of now, the most reliable source of English spelling, Oxford Dictionary, does not acknowledge the Bangla as an adjective. I am fairly neutral to the case. Like a vast number of Bengalis (or Bangalis), including the Bangla Academy itself, I am an advocate of using transliteration of Bangla words rather than those of Hindi. So, to avoid bias, I am leaving this to other users.

"Recently, another experienced Bangladeshi musician, Arif - residing in Australia, starts with some projects based on Bangladeshi Music." --- Looks to me like someone's trying get some exposure...If someone who already contributed to it doesn't delete or verify it, i'll delete it within a few days. -AA

Rock Music

I think it's about time we trim the Rock Music section. I propose we keep only the most important and relevant parts and move the artist names and such to a seperate article like Bangladeshi band music -- may be we can rename this Bangladeshi Rock Music, since they are used interchangeably. Also, there are way too many blank links on this page. may be we can unlink them (the ones w/o a wiki entry), until we have articles for each one of them. -- Abid Ahmed 05:55, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

The page is in a very bad condition.

This is a very important page for our country's cultural aspect. But, unfortunately, it's got loads of misleading/missing links, spelling/grammatical errors, informal passages, messy lists, unprofessional categories. I see several unpopular musicians in places of notable musicians of the current times. It's like a page from the early 90s in most parts. Let's make this page look better, good people! Just a few cents.

One of the many suggestions I have is, there's no need to list ALL the notable artists/bands in this page. Let's keep this page more of an informative kind about the eras and types rather than a catalog of musicians. Let's make another article called "List of Bangladeshi musicians" or something and categorize them alphabetically/genre-wise in there. This way, it'll be cleaner and we'll have more space for all the notable musicians to be listed in an on-point and clean manner. No mention of "Gono songit"?

Spam?

Infleunce of K-Pop? I've lived in this country for 22 years and never heard of such a thing as K-pop. I'll be waiting for a response from whoever wrote that. I'm removing the Tishma part without any ado however; Wikipedia is an advertisement free web site as far as I can recall. (If I had my personal bias notwithstanding I would have kept it, thinking it was a great piece of sarcasm.)

1. Intro: Removed text which is not supported by references anywhere in the article, moved Modernisation to body of article.
2. Classical: Reduced WP:PEACOCK and lengthy unreferenced text about specific artists.
3. Folk: Reduced WP:PEACOCK
4. Baul: Reduced unreferenced claims and WP:PEACOCK
5. Adhunik: Reduced unreferenced claims
6. Modern Music: Reduced unreferenced claims, including unreferenced "the greatest contributors to the pop music"
7. Rock Music: As per Moden Music
8. Singers/bands: Removed WP:INDISCRIMINATE lists of singers/bands
