Ó Laoí vs. O'Ley vs. O Laidhigh
[edit]I understand (although I am no Gaelic speaker) that Ó Laoí is the modern conventional Gaelic spelling of Lee, however historically this spelling does not appear to have been used by the family of the subject of the article. Several references give the name of the family of hereditary physicians to the O'Flarherty, known as the O'Lee / O'Lye / O'Ley, as derived from the Gaelic O'Laidhigh. See, for example, the Irish Times [1], quoting Edward MacLysaght (1980) Irish Families and Michael C. O'Laughlin (2002) The Book of Irish Families, Great & Small, p.175 [2]. As such, is it appropriate to use the modern generic equivalent surname (also applied to persons of the same surname from non-irish origins) to a person whom historically would never have used such a spelling?
