Orphaned references in Murray Island, Queensland

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Murray Island, Queensland's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Census2016":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 11:19, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We have two articles, this one Murray Island which claims to be the name of that island and Mer Island, Queensland which is the name of the locality on the island, exactly the same place. I say "claims to be the name of that island" because when you look at the Queensland Place Names database what you find is that there are multiple names as follows:

  • Entry 20523 for the island with the name Meer Island (with Mer Island listed as an alternative)
  • Entry 46717 for the locality with the name Mer Island (no alternatives)
  • Entry 23612 for the town with the name Murray Island (no alternatives

So we are discussing one island (area 4km2) which is also one locality containing one town (on the north-west coast where most of the 400 island residents live) which has three official names. I'm not sure there's any real reason to have two articles and the exisingtwo articles probably came about from the different names (and in any case the island article has the wrong name, should be Meer Island).

I presume (but may be wrong) that Mer and Meer are both the same Indigenous name with variant spellings rather than two different names. Murray is a name assigned by the British in 1791.

My proposal is to merge the two articles and have one of the three names as the primary article title and the other two as redirects. So, I seek your views on:

  1. Whether to merge the articles (which I think we should do)
  2. Which name to be the primary article title (I'm inclined towards Mer Island, being an Indigenous name and being an official alternative to Meer Island)

Your thoughts? Please discuss here to keep the discussion in one place.

Support the proposal to merge. Govenment sources like Torres Straight Island Regional Council switch between both names on the same page, perhaps using Murray for describing historical events and Mer for present events. I agree that Mer Island, Queensland would be better target given the practice elsewhere of preferring indigenous names in Australasia. There does seem to be the distiction of using Murray Island for the formal name of the town, but even so I think that it's best merged, even if we have a separaet section for the town on the merged page. Per WP:CONCISE, a merge to the redirect Mer Island might be best. Klbrain (talk) 13:38, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
