When the 'capall' epithet is mentioned, all agree on "h./ua" an Chapaill, the grandson of the Horse.
AT is the only outlier with 'Muirchertach' for the 1036 entry

Putting that all together, there seems to be a distinct person who died in 1036, the son of Muireadhach (died 1034): Murchadh mac Muireadhaigh mhic an Chapaill Ua Flaithbheartaigh. This implies that it is Muiredhach's father whose epithet is 'an Capall', and hence for clarity, Muireadhach is '(mac) an Chapaill'.
