Requested move 28 January 2015
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. Although there doesn't seem to be much support for the idea that the current title is correct, there is clearly no agreement on a better alternative. mpv (software) might be one possibility, so it may be worth starting a second RM with this proposal if anyone feels particularly strongly on the matter. Mpv player → mpv – The correct name is 'mpv' accprding to the official website. [1] 171.97.79.54 (talk) 18:27, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
The manual[2] names the player as mpv, not mpv player. 80.222.34.157 (talk) 17:40, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose leave as is and improve article with book sources. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:29, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose mpv (MPlayer) would be possible, but the proposed title should remain a redirect to the disambiguation page -- 65.94.40.137 (talk) 08:19, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Redirect to mpv (media player). Sounds totally appropriate to me. In ictu oculi, why did you revert that move? -- intgr [talk] 13:41, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

- To many people "MPV" is the recording format and the software that writes and plays it, and "MPV player" is the handlable electronic device that can play that format. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 17:29, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- This is irrelevant, "MPV" is not a recording format. It's the name of a program, nothing else. This program is NOT named "mpv player". Having it on the current location is plain wrong. I'd rather delete it than spread misinformation. I'd also like to know: In ictu oculi, why did you revert the move? 78.46.126.102 (talk) 17:43, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- It actually is a format as well, unrelated to the software discussed in this article. I think Anthony is referring to OSTA MPV format, which I hadn't heard of until now. In this light, perhaps mpv (software) is a clearer name for this article? -- intgr [talk] 18:09, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, I was not aware of the format's existence. Nonetheless, any relation to the subject of this article is accidental and uninentional at best. I'm pretty sure it does not even support the OSTA MPV format. I'm fine with any disambiguated name, as long as it makes it clear that the title is "mpv". "mpv (software)" would be fine. 78.46.126.102 (talk) 18:58, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- mpv (software) would be consistent with other media player wiki articles here. Oddly, Banshee (media player) is an article while Banshee (software) is a redirect to disambiguation. Also, 78.46.126.102 is totally correct about the naming, it's not named "mpv player" as seen in manual page as pointed out above. 80.222.34.157 (talk) 20:15, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Banshee (media player) makes sense because there's also Banshee (video game) and both are "software". I think it's better to make these choices case-by-case rather than trying to achieve some sort of uniformity. -- intgr [talk] 13:04, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

- Question why is mpv called mpv? GregKaye 12:38, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- It's a made-up acronym that has no actual meaning. The closest explanation I can come up with for the origin is the connection to MPlayer, and it's also a pun on common file formats such as “mp4” or “mkv”. While the official stance is that there's no expansion, it has been jokingly referred to as “mpv plays videos”. 193.138.219.233 (talk) 14:37, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

COI edits
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
I am 87.165.30.72. I have made a handful of edits under this IP: Special:Contribs/87.165.30.72
As noted on User talk:87.165.30.72, these are COI edits since I contribute some amount of code to mpv. That said, I am not paid by mpv, nor am I a member of the mpv group on github or in any other way officially affiliated with mpv. Still, I would appreciate it if somebody could review/rewrite these changes for neutrality and notability.

- Note: I've marked this now as answered. COI edit requests cannot be reviewed retrospectively, that is, you must post all edit requests on the talk page and let an editor review them before adding into the article. This is only for editors for whom there is a conflict of interest. I would recommend you register an account to enable us to keep track of your changes. I've reviewed your edits and nothing has a red flag, so it's fine at this stage. Best regards, st170e 12:35, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
