Is Moxon a Yagi-Uda antenna?
[edit]I note that currently this page states that the Moxon antenna is "a Yagi-Uda antenna with folded elements". I am not sure about this. The Yagi-Uda antenna is marked by having straight dipoles with a length in the order of half a wavelength. The coupling between the elements is predominantly of magnetic field nature. The latter is concentric around each element therefore coupling occurs. The E-field coupling is much weaker than the magnetic field coupling, because the ends of the dipoles are not directed towards other elements. This makes the Yagi-Uda fundamentally different compared to the Moxon antenna. In contrast to the Yagi-Uda, The Moxon antenna gets its superb front-to-back ratio from the strong electric field coupling which is enhanced by the folding of the elements. The ends of the elements point to each other and that creates the properties of the Moxon antenna. I therefore think that the Moxon antenna is much more than a form of the Yagi-Uda antenna. - Moxon mentions that the ordinary Yagi has insufficient coupling between elements, and so he arranges small capacitors between the ends of his elements to increase coupling. The amount of coupling is critical to performance, and in the original case he found that buttons held the wires at just the right spacing to give the optimum capacitance. He also discusses the issue that optimum F/B does not coincide with optimum gain, and indeed, he suggests that it is better to adjust for a wider rear suppression but not so deep.
