[edit]The link to this site is from a reference to St. Finnian of Moville. Whilst the information about St. Finnian is correct, a fundamental error has been made in suggesting that the Moville referred to is in Donegal.
There is a town of that name in Donegal, but it is not the place where St. Finnian had his monastery. That 'Moville' is is County Down and is also spelt 'Movilla'.
This was a famous monastic settlement along the Ards Peninsula.
The name 'Moville' is written in the Irish language as 'Magh Bhile' (pronounced (Ma Villa), meaning the 'Plain of the Ancient Tree'

Irish language name
[edit]@The Banner The name Magh Bhile is listed by the Irish Placenames Commission (logainm.ie) in relation to the civil parish but it is obviously the origin of the English language name of the town. It is also the Irish version favoured on the signs at the western and southern approaches to the town (see Google Maps streetview) and I think deserves to be mentioned here. Ccferrie (talk) 08:28, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- I agree with that. Unfortunately the article describes the town, not the civil parish. So what you did was incorrect. But you might add a section about the civil parish to the article, outside the lead. The Banner talk 10:10, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
@Guliolopez - the maps on Logainm clearly show the extent of the town boundary of Moville overlapping the extent of the Civil Parish boundary of Moville Upper. For example, Moville Community College is clearly shown both within the boundary of Moville town and the boundary of Moville Upper Civil Parish. I think it is correct therefore to say that the town "straddles" both civil parishes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ccferrie (talk • contribs) 11:37, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Ccferrie. While I 100% understand the point, and while I'm sure you're right, to come to that conclusion we have to interpret the map and come to a conclusion not explicitly stated by the source. Which is a form of WP:SYNTH. Given that the existing logainm entry directly states that the town is in Maigh Bhile Íochtarach/Moville Lower, and this supports the Maigh Bhile/'plain of ancient tree' connection your edit seems primarily intended to make, I'm not personally sure we need to add or "interpret" additional sources in that section(?)
