Lahars a threat to people in the area?

According to the Article:

• There are very few people close enough to the mountain to be threatened by a lahar. I believe the Drift River Oil Terminal was evacuated. There are pictures at the Alaska Volcano Observatory website indicating a lahar has hit the terminal and deposited almost 2 meters of mud there. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:04, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Steep or Not?

According to the Introduction: "Mount Redoubt is not a particularly steep peak..."

But in the Geology section it says: "The volcano's cone is steep–sided..."

That does need to be fixed, although it is not as contradictory as it sounds. In the intro, the implied comparison is supposed to be with all mountains (including non-volcanoes), whereas in the Geology section, I think the comparison is with volcanoes only. Caught the 3rd Explosion on WSR-88D

I copied the animated .gif radar loop (Public Domain, Produced by US Gov.) from the NOAA/NWS site of the 3rd, and largest so far explosion, and put it on my blog at http://zaphodb777.dyndns.org/blog/index.php . If appropriate, someone may wish to grab it, and massage it for inclusion in this article.

Minor Edit

Have changed the precision of the volume from -3 to -9. But I suggest that cubic miles and cubic km are more sensible units for mountain volumes. No conversion template for these units. Makewrite (talk) 06:19, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Name etymology

• Well, there is the word redoubt, which is a type of fortification. It's possible it was thought the mountain resembled a fortress. There is also a story I've heard that when Captain Cook was sailing up the inlet looking for the Northwest Passage, he saw a large mountain that led him to once again re-consider whether he might have found the passage, or in other words, causing him to "re-doubt" his hypothesis. Me feeling is that this is one of those stories old timer Alaskans tell to newcomers in the hopes that they will repeat it and make a fool of themselves though. I just checked GNIS and they seem to be indicating it does mean a "fortified place." Beeblebrox (talk) 20:15, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I added some relevant name info. More important: should the page be moved to "Redoubt Volcano", since that's the official name? Recent move

I disagree with the move to "Mount Redoubt", as I don't see that there was anything wrong with, or awkward about, the more precise and descriptive name "Mount Redoubt (Alaska)". However, the issue of whether it should be moved to the official name "Redoubt Volcano" is still open, see previous paragraph. I am curious about the name as given in the article where it says "The official name of the mountain is dfhfdh Volcano". Is this a piece of vandalism, a typo, or some weird spelling of which I was previously unaware?! 92.235.236.120 (talk) 10:31, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

That whole section has seen a lot edits over the past few hours, and none of them have been particularly well-sourced or encyclopedic. In my opinion, the whole section could be pushed over a cliff and no one would miss it. Fleetflame 20:50, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

3/26/09

I'm sure there will be some good sources in the coming hours, but just FYI the eruption today sent a cloud of ash into populated areas on the southern Kenai Peninsula, including Ninilchik and Homer. The event lasted several hours, but ash deposits were fairly light, less than 1/8 of an inch. Still annoying though, my eyes are still burning. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:05, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

The list of eruptive activity for 2009 was getting too long for the article. I feel the information is very relevant, but due to its length I have created its own article. 2009 Mount Redoubt (Alaska) eruptive activity. Interesting clip

This time-lapse video assembled from AVO images from 30 March shows the ash plume coming north straight at the camera, and gradually moving to a more easterly direction as the wind direction shifts. Kablammo (talk) 16:35, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I appreciate you guys adding content to the article. It is in my plans to make it into an FA after it disappears from the news. However, when you guys add content, since the article is a good article, you need to use a citation template and properly format it. It is imperative to the article's stability as a GA.
