"Variant" (from reliable source) not actually used.

[edit]

The name variant listed "Mountairy" is not actually used by anyone living in the community, and I haven't encountered it in any of the secondary sources (histories of Pittsylvania County, family histories, scholarly literature on tobacco cultivation) nor primary sources (contemporary maps, 19th and 20th century diaries). Nevertheless, the USGS GNIS lists it as a variant, which lists as its source "US Postal Guide, various edition dates. Use code US-T133/YYYY.". How can we get this spurious variant removed from the article? -Ben (talk) 23:37, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The source for the spurious variant is a printed guide to post offices that, for some reason, lists _all_ Mount Airy locations as "Mountairy": United States Offical Postal Guide (1903), p. 189. I suspect an error on the part of the typesetter. -Ben (talk) 23:17, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
