History section?
[edit]I believe we should insert a history section that would talk about the National Development Plan and Transport 21 for example. There should also be a section entitled "The Interurban Routes", which would detail the development of these, from the planning to construction phase. Seighean (talk) 20:19, 1 January 2009 (UTC)#
- Oh definitely. I'll leave that to you. My own idea for a layout would be:
> 1983 - 1990
> 1990 - 2000
> 2000 - 2009
You could include sub-headings under those. For example, under 2000-2009, you could include the Transport21 and NDP sub-headings. You could discuss the MUIs etc.
So under 2000-2009
>Main Developments - discusses the main developments over this period >Transport21 >NDP >Motorway Redesignation (Tranche 1)
And whatever else.
I talk more about it below... Trans5999 (talk) 16:28, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
This is taking shape, but we need citations.Seighean (talk)
- I've just seen the history section. Excellent work whoever did it. However, I will edit it and add links and references.
Also, the tone of address is incorrect in a few places. I think a more formal register is needed for this site. I'll just tidy that up a bit.
There's a few other sections that could do with a bit of fattening. There's plenty I left out of the "future" section I'm hoping others will fill in. Trans5999 (talk) 23:00, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Context
Should be more on this.
Why did Ireland build motorways when it did? At first sight. About 30 years behind the neighbouring UK, including Northern Ireland. 40 years behind the USA, and 60 years behind Germany. How important was EEC /EU funding? What was the domestic political context? To what extent where they welcomed/ opposed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.84.189.190 (talk) 11:13, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Tidy Up
[edit]This is a good page, but looks a little cluttered and messy, how would you suggest we go about tidying it up?
Trans5999 (talk) 10:51, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Not sure. I'm out of ideas for the most part (brain is hibernating, not good...), but I really dislike the main photo. Even though it's one of my own, it is dull, dreary, and not very flattering. Seighean (talk) 15:07, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
It's the weather...
I think a nice aerial shot would do the trick.
This article needs a radical overhaul. So I've tried to put together a new template:
For starters, that huge opening paragraph simply has to go. Too big, too many points made and all over the place... there needs to be a clear, concise introduction stating the main facets of the motorway network, the main plans for the future and perhaps a little bit of history (when the first motorway opened).
Where we go from there is a bit more difficult. I think there should be a section explaining the basic features and rules of the Irish motorway. What's lacking from the article at the moment is an actual description of what motorways are like in this country. The section should give an indication as to the standard of the road(D2M), safety features (Phones, crash barriers) and the restrictions (there is a "motorway ahead" image I made somewhere on this site). It should be concise enough as there is already a high quality page discussing the standard of motorways here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorway
There should be a link provided in the section to that page.
The route number inheritance section could be kept, but it needs to be shortened considerably. The bit that talks about the M50 can be transferred to the M50 page.
This section:
Needs to be moved to the HQDC page.
Motorway Redesignation Tranche 2, M20, M17 and future plans can come under a larger "future" section. The motorway redesignation I think needs to be explained more clearly and there need to be seperate sections for each tranche.
A brief history section could also be included, linking the excellent history pages that you have been creating and editing.
This section:
Can come under "Future" as well.
So, my layout would be:
-Introduction - Brief Introduction -Features - Discusses features of Irish motorways with following sub-headings:
> Rules or Restrictions - which sounds better? > Specification - discusses actual quality of motorways, wide median, narrow median etc. > Safety Features - phones, crash barriers etc. (although this probably can be included in "specification" > Signage - again this could come under "specification" > Route Number Inheritance > Other - misc information
All with some of your great photos of course.
-History - brief description of the history of Irish motorways. I'll leave this to you since you're the expert here. I'm wondering whether this should be before features, I'm not sure.
Definitely one of the sub-headings here should be: > Motorway Redesignation - Gives an overview of the process and the routes involved. Should also link to the part of the article where future redesignations are dealt with...
-Future - Outline the key plans for the motorway network. Following sub-headings may be appropiate > Major Inter-urbans - deals with M6-M9 > Atlantic Corridor - deals with M20, M17, M18 > Other Motorways - M3, M50 plans, > Future Redesignations - deals with tranche 2 - should link back to Tranche 1 section > Motorway Service Areas
And then obviously the references.
So what do you think? I think it would make the page look at lot more presentable and approchable. At the moment it's very uninviting, a huge lump of text, a cluttered appearance and too many tables. If we can make this page look as presentable as the M6-M9 pages - whose templates btw I assume we'll be using for the future M20, M18 (and possibly M3) pages - we'll be doing well. Trans5999 (talk) 16:05, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- Also, I just noticed this is rated as a "high importance" article, but is only seen as "start class". This is a situation we can rectify. Trans5999 (talk) 16:06, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
