Changes to the article

I was thinking about implementing changes to this article in the hope of moving it in the direction of GA status. In its current form, it has various problems. Some key problems are unsourced content and excessive amount of intricate details on minor aspects of the topic while leaving out some major aspects. The article has a total of 16 paragraphs what lack citation and various half-sourced paragraphs. Excessive details are especially a problem in the section "Practical applications". In regard to missing aspects: the article has its own section for content theories of motivation but fails to mention process theories. But the problem of having too many details for some aspects while lacking important information elsewhere is found at various other points as well. WP:SUMMARY STYLE is relevant here.

The article also has many maintenance templates: 1x Unbalanced section, 1x Expand section, 1x Overly detailed, 1x Essay-like, 5x need quotation to verify, 1x original research?, 1x by whom?, and 1x permanent dead link.

Trying to address all these issues would require that some existing sections be rewritten based on reliable sources while new passages have to be added to cover the missing aspects. I was thinking about doing more in-depth research and preparing a draft to fix and implement the ideas pointed out here. I thought it might be a good idea to hear what others think on these issues since this is a very broad topic and preparing a draft could take quite a while. Short update on the process: I have been working on a draft found at User:Phlsph7/Motivation_-_draft. It addresses many of the suggestions above: it adds required sources, it summarizes overly detailed explanations, it discusses missing topics, and it tackles the problems pointed out by the maintenance tags. It's still in an early stage: it hasn't been copyedited, the lead hasn't been written, there are no images yet, and wikilinks need to be added. I will address those issues in the next few days and I'm also open for further feedback. It may still be a little before this is ready for mainspace. Phlsph7 (talk) 08:12, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

I finished the remaining adjustments and went ahead to publish the text. I tried to include most of the ideas from the previous version but there were many intricate details that had to be left out to comply with WP:SUMMARYSTYLE. In the process, I also added sources to all the previously unsourced claims. Please let me know if you think that some essential information was removed in the process so we can explore options for its inclusion in the updated version. Other feedback on further improvements is also welcome. There remain a few minor issues that I plan to address over the coming days. Phlsph7 (talk) 16:25, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
