Erosion or Tectonic Collision?
[edit]http://www.nationalgeographic.com/monterey/ax/primary_fs.html
"Scientists once thought it was simply eroded by an ancient river dating from a period when sea levels were lower. Now most agree it was created by titanic collisions between plates of the Earth’s crust."
If the current scholarly consensus leans toward a tectonic origin for the Monterey Canyon, don't you think it would be nice for Wikipedia to reference it? Janko (talk) 06:45, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- There are aspects of this topic which could form a very interesting article. (Unfortunately I am engaged in other projects.) E.g., see the article by Riggs et al. (Science, 5 July 1996) about evidence that there once was a river flowing from what is now Texas through Nevada, and presumably into the Pacific at some point on the California coast. - J.
