The islands are technically called the "Montebello Islands", no space in-ntween 'Monte' and 'Bello', its just one word, thanks.

List of known Island Names and Coordinates

[edit]

The source for the few coordinates that were included is [1] and similar. These coordinates are inaccurate, being too imprecise, and do not accurately identify the island concerned. A better source, and more accurate, may be found at [2]. The link refers to a database compiled in an Excel file giving decimal coords with much more precision, enabling island identification. I am attempting to edit this table to include more data and better precision. Ptilinopus (talk) 13:15, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have now completed the inserting of coords for all listed islands. I have deleted "Lowendal Island" - there is none such. Lowendal Islands as a group exists south of the Montebello Islands (and closer to Barrow Island) but are not generally part of Montebello islands group. I have inserted Hovea Island while researching these, and before discovering that there are some 47 other islands named not included here, and locations (coords) available. I shall assess these before inserting any more - it may not be valuable to include the names and coords of all tiny islets. I hope to add any of significant size, however, at some future time. I have now verified as official from both the cited EKSA database, and confirmed from Geoscience Australia's 2010 database the additional island names. All known have been added to the names and coordinates list, along with official names of ten small island groups within the archipelago. The main text has been update to reflect the additional known names, the larger island list has been accordingly expanded, and the islet group names have been listed. There remain questions on the position of 4 islands named, and enquiries are in process with Geoscience Australia concerning them. These are Frankenia (there seems a wrong digit in the coords - the apparent corrected location has been added to the list); Goodenia (where it is unclear to which of two islands the coords as given refer); and Pimelea/Lobelia (the two coords appear to refer to one island; the coords are only some 50 metres apart). I hope to update these when more information is available. Ptilinopus (talk) 01:55, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Move to separate page

[edit]

I have forked this list to the separate page it deserves. It was unbalancing the article and making it take longer to load or save, Maias (talk) 03:34, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
