Copyright?

The Admissions section appears to be a direct copy/paste from the Montclair State University website. Even if the university did relinquish copyright, the section does not appear to meet Wikipedia's standards on tone, neutrality, or point of view. I tried to post the possibly copyright infringement notice, but I could not get it to just delete the one section. 98.109.160.230 (talk) 16:50, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Appearance in Firefox

Hi, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I don't know where else to drop this message. The problem is that this page, for whatever reason, seems not to be displayed correctly in Firefox 3.5.5. I just tried clearing the cache and reloading the page and I also asked a friend to test the page.. he's got the same result. So, the problem doesn't seem to occur when using the IE 6 (actually I don't use IE, so that's the latest version on my computer). My version information of Firefox is: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Hope I can help you to fix this problem! Photography Club

Added an external link to a Photography group I started on the photographic website Flickr. The group pool consists of a large collection of photos taken on campus. One day, I hope that the pool will become large enough to be considered a photographic documentation of Montclair State University. group can be found here --Matthew McCullough 17:47, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

There are too many photos lining the right side of the page. Some ought to be removed and a few should be integrated into the article as commonly seen throughout wikipedia.

Expansion request

Diverse student body?

Having come across this through the alumni category, I'm surprised at this sentance:

Montclair State University is also home to one of the most diverse student populations in the whole of the United States of America with more than 100 nations being represented in its student body.

Is this unusual for a US university? I'll admit ignorance - here in the UK most universities of the same size could find over 100 nations in the student body. Timrollpickering 00:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Good point. The fact is that in some respects Montclair is less diverse than, for example, Rutgers-New Brunswick. Another point is that Montclair's student population is heavily weighted towards minorities, mainly blacks and latinos, to the point that it qualifies as a "minority" institution. The claim that it is one of the "most diverse student populations" is therefore probably a PR statement that could be clarified so that it is not so vague. particularly in a state like NJ, the diversity at Montclair is hardly shocking, so perhaps a better way to incorporate the diversity into the list of features could be found. 69.116.248.249 05:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)MSU_Alum

39% of Montclair's student body is comprised of students whose ethnic background would be considered a minority. This forms the basis of its claims of diversity, though it is the case that the bulk of that 39% comes from African American and Latino populations. --Also an MSU Alum

• Did MSU ever prohibit student attendance based on race?
• Was MSU ever classified as an "all-girls" or "all-boys" school?

(An article from 1913 refers to Montclair's girls witnessing police chasing and firing their weapons to apprehend a suspected murderer through the campus, but it is not clear if there were just a higher ratio of women at the school.)

Introduction

The current introduction includes some material that does not seem beneficial for an introduction or summary to the entry. In particular, the paragraph about the transportation system seems oddly placed. Could this be moved somewhere else or deleted? Thelema418 (talk) 02:51, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

No. In particular, this article reads like marketing rather than academic and enyclopedic content. The article focuses more on the instruction divisions of the school and organizational components than its history. The article reads like a promotion. Even as an interest piece to prospective students, critical information is missing such as "How many rapes occur on campus?", "How many racially biased crimes occur on campus?", "What was the schools policy on ROTC during the period where soldiers could be discharged for homosexuality?" It seems very bizarre to focus only on those specific facts as examples of missing information. In any case, you're free to add such information if it's missing, important, and well-sourced. ElKevbo (talk) 02:09, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

The questions are suggested opportunities that would not appear in the campus brochures: the article appears to be a promotional piece, especially since all the sources appear to be Montclair State University websites. For those reasons I believe this article lacks neutrality. As in my previous posts, history is particularly lacking in this article. I mentioned WWI / WWII. The era of racial integration is not discussed. Further, there are large segments of the text that lack any type of citation. These segments also include opinionated puffery like "the prospective student should have followed a challenging high school curriculum." I maintain that this article is not yet worthy of GA status. Admissions

Marked need for citations and POV. The POV issue is that there is no historical data: it is a statement of what "should be" or a presentation of how the school wishes to be perceived, but not data based facts about admissions. Thelema418 (talk) 02:29, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Confusing: Alumni and people associated with MSU

This section needs improvement. I marked it as confusing because it is unclear whether people in the list are "Alumni" or "Associated with MSU." For example, Connie Myers is listed, but was she a student? Or, is she "associated" because she's a politician who helped get endowments for the university? I'm not certain about the noteworthiness of people who attended the school and transferred, such as Ginsberg and Jason Biggs, in this list. Rankings

This section needs some work. Like much of the article, it reads like a promotion. Disputed: "second largest university in New Jersey."

This article said "the second largest university in New Jersey."

But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_New_Jersey says that Rutgers University and Thomas Edison State University are both bigger, which would make it third.

So one of the articles must be wrong.

https://collegestats.org/colleges/new-jersey/largest/ says it is larger than Thomas Edison State University and is the second largest university, but the third largest college or university, after Rutgers University and Bergen Community College. However, I am not sure whether that article is up to date or considered a reliable source.

Please determine whether Montclair State University is the second or third largest and then update either the Montclair State University article or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_New_Jersey

UPDATE: The TESC number on List of Colleges and Universities in New Jersey was incorrect, most likely a typo (i.e. typed "2" instead of "1"). I've updated numbers on that page for both schools using data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Edit Request

I am an employee of Montclair State University, so I have a COI. But, I’m providing these sources to help editors update this page. There are more recent enrollment stats, a new source for Public Research University designation, a new designation bu the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, and a recent name change to the Floyd Hall Ice Arena.

• (A source for the First Sentence) Public Research University
• (A source for and an update to the Second Sentence) As of October 2020, there were 21,005 total enrolled students: 16,374 undergraduate students and 4,631 graduate students.
• In 2016, Montclair State University was designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)
• In 2020, Floyd Hall Arena was acquired by the university and re-named Montclair State University Ice Arena

In addition to the public research citation in the first sentence, I also added a line about the designation in the History section. Thanks for outlining your request in a clear way.
