I have created this article as a WP:SPINOFF from the article Tibetan wolf, the reasons being found under the section Mongolian wolf#Taxonomy. The Mongolian wolf should not be confused with the Tibetan wolf. There has been - and still exists - some confusion as to what is chanco and where its range is. Its range has in the past been described as including parts of Central Asia but this is now challenged by more recent writers. Therefore, I ask editors who wish to make contributions to this article to check their references to ensure (a) it relates specifically to the Mongolian wolf, or (b) where it relates to C. l. chanco that it is a recent description. Mongolian wolf →Tibetan wolf?

[edit]

There is no source that states that the Mongolian wolf is the Himalayan wolf - the series of genetic studies by G. Werhahn show that these are NOT the same wolf. Yes, it creates confusion that we have 2 wolves classified as chanco, but that is how it will have to be until this matter is resolved by taxonomic authorities. Since both Himalayan and Mongolian wolves are now considered as same subspecies, the pages should be merged. Ishan87 (talk) 16:13, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
