Socorro magma body
[edit]@Chris.urs-o, Vsmith, and Bejnar: The Socorro magma body paragraph seems out of place in the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field article.
The Socorro magma body is not closely tied to the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field, which ceased activity over 24 million years ago. It is related rather to the Socorro accommodation zone of the Rio Grande Rift. They are not completely unrelated, since the volcanic field and the accommodation zone probably reflect the same ancient structural trend (Morenci lineament), but the link is tenuous.
Rather than remove the paragraph, I'd like to solicit opinions from other editors on what do with the information. Options I see are:
- Make explicit the link via a discussion of the Morenci lineament.
- Move the information into its own article.
- Move the information into the article on the Rio Grande rift.
I'm open to other possibilities. I'm not actually keen on the first, because it seems to blur the focus on the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field and shift it onto a larger feature.
Whichever we do, it needs to be done cleanly so that due attribution is preserved for the original paragraph. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 22:48, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
Well, I'd move the info to the Rio Grande rift article, except that the information is already there in more detail. So just delete. There is no need to take additional action to "preserve the attribution" of a deleted paragraph, as that preservation is already done in this article's history (for what it is worth). See text in Rio Grande rift article:
- The Socorro, New Mexico, region of the central rift hosts an inflating mid-crustal sill-like magma body at a depth of 19 km that is responsible for anomalously high earthquake activity in the vicinity, including the largest rift-associated earthquakes in historic times (two events of approximately magnitude 5.8) in July and November 1906. So just delete. --Bejnar (talk) 18:30, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- Preserving attribution is important mainly if we move the information, either into its own article or a different article. If we just delete, then of course that's unnecessary. I think you make a good case for just deleting, and I doubt that's going to be controversial, so I'll proceed with it now. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 19:48, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
