Confusing...
[edit]According to an article written while the episode was being recorded, Tom Wolfe, Michael Chabon and Jonathan Franzen were all supposed to be killed by a giant boulder. This ending was cut from the episode because none of the three are killed. As well, several lines were cut from the Chabon/Franzen fight, such as Franzen shouting "Ah, my trademark glasses!" [1]
"This ending was cut from the episode because none of the three are killed." this paragraph shows a good point, but this particular sentence adds nothing and at the same time makes no sense, any corrections or removals suggested?
I don't expect a lot of logic from The Simpsons. Gore Vidal is kicked out in front of Lisa. This flaw ruined my enjoyment, difficult to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drsruli (talk • contribs) 05:38, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Very well
[edit]Since some people obviously didn't read the article:
"Tom Wolfe is screaming. He screams softly, this Southern gentleman, his trademark white suit unwrinkled, his spats unwavering even as a giant granite boulder hurtles down upon him."
?\"Chabon throws his whole body into it, lunging at the microphone, while Franzen keeps a dry, acerbic cool. Omine, the producer, reads them their cues, and writers sitting around the room toss out ideas as they occur.
Franzen: "Gaa! Dajjjmit! Ach! Rrrr!"
Writer: "How about, 'Nooo! My prescription-less glasses, the ones I wear to look smart!'"
Franzen: "My trademark glasses!""
"Eventually, it's time to encounter that same runaway granite chunk that flattened Tom Wolfe. Franzen's scream has a hint of falsetto; Chabon writhes as he lets out an anguished moan."
"Then he leaves the studio. Alive. Vidal is the only one of these authors to escape a cartoon death."
Cultural reference reverts by Scorpion0422
[edit]Scorpion0422 has reverted the following cult. refs. that I've added in:
- The scene were The Crazy Old Man jumps off the high-dive board spoofs the intro to The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.
- Homer waking up having clues on his body is a parody of the 2001 film Memento.
He/she claims they are not notable, I disagree (esp. with the first one with the links between Rocky and Bullwinkle and The Simpsons). What are other people's views? Surely they're more notable than the Vermont Teddy Bear ref and the Bread Loafers conference?! Lugnuts 11:54, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Please tell me I'm not the only one who's seen Rocky & Bullwinkle before?! Lugnuts 19:33, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Cultural references
[edit]- The song "Let's Get It Started" by The Black Eyed Peas is used in this episode.
- The tattoo on Homer and the various other "Don't Forget" notes he left himself is a reference to the movie Memento, where an amnesiac uses tattoos and notes to remember details of his wife's murder.
- The Old Jewish Man flies using his underarm patagium to the theme music from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.
- Moe mentions Bob Seger and Haystacks Calhoun as examples of great men.
- Homer finds out Moe lives in a hotel and remarks "You're like Eloise", referring to the film, Eloise at the Plaza (2003), based on the Eloise series of books.
- Lisa compares Moe's poetry to T. S. Eliot's epic poem, The Wasteland.
- J. Jonah Jameson, the fast-talking publisher who approves Moe's poetry is the character from the Spider-Man comic books, in this case specifically the films - the second of which was co-written by guest star Michael Chabon. Simmons is the second J. Jonah Jameson to appear, with Ed Asner (who voiced him in the 90's Spider-Man animated series) appearing in an earlier episode.
- The "Wordloaf" Literary Conference is a reference to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, held every year at the Breadloaf campus of Middlebury College, Vermont. While in Vermont, the Simpsons visit the Vermont Teddy Bear Company.
- The Rhode Island state trooper rides a Big Wheel, lampooning the state's small size.
- The man with a paper bag on his face is Thomas Pynchon, who appeared in Simpsons episode "Diatribe of a Mad Housewife", and guest-voices as himself in "All's Fair in Oven War".
- During the Chabon vs. Franzen fight, Chabon says, "I think your nose needs some corrections!", a reference to Franzen's best-known work The Corrections.
