Swedish whaler?

[edit]

I've seen several secondary sources claim a "Swedish whaler" caught Mocha Dick in 1859, after it had apparently already been caught. My question is: What Swedish whaler? I wasn't even aware such an industry existed in Sweden in the 19th century. I believe there was one (barely) in the 18th, but that it was restricted to the North Atlantic. Has anyone questioned the validity of this claim? SaberToothedWhale (talk) 19:19, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There were Finnish whalers in the 1850s, who wrote in Swedish. I doubt the claim though, as Mocha Dick was apparently caught several times. Newspapers appear to just write whatever they want to sell papers. BulbousCow (talk) 15:01, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Other White Whales

[edit]

There seems to be an awful lot of this article that is about other white whales for an article about a specific whale, especially related to Amos Peter Smalley, most of which is off topic (and "(Whipple's report that "as of 1954 there was a man living on Nantucket who claimed to have harpooned a white whale in 1902" is in error; Mr. Smalley never resided on Nantucket.[citation needed])" seems utterly irrelevant).Auto98uk (talk) 19:38, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
