Proposed Improvements to the "Mitra surname" Page

[edit]

I’d like to discuss some proposed improvements to the "Mitra surname" page. After reviewing the content, I believe there are several areas that could benefit from additional information and clarification. I would like to draw attention on the use of Mitra surname by various other castes in Bengal like betel cultivators who are not visvamitra gotra. Secondly, Geographical spread of Mitra surname is not accurate in this page it is solely represents as Bengali surname But it is widely used by Arora- khatri community in punjab. And it would be nice to add the use of Mitra surname among parsi community along with shedding some light on the Mitharaic community worshiping the Iranian god Mithra. And it would be great to add on how Mitra as a last name is traditionally used by Brahmins. Eg- visvamitra, pushyamitra, Agnimitra. India is culturally diverse nation and inclusivity is in its morals from the very day of its creation and I would like Wikipedia to reflect the same when it's dealing with any topic related to indian cultural Heritage. Eclipsing the identity of any community would be against the very moral spirit of our nation.

I believe these updates will make the page more informative and valuable to readers. I would be happy to help research and contribute content, but I welcome any feedback on these suggestions and would love to collaborate on improving this page.

Thank you for considering this! 2409:4065:D08:655C:0:0:1E4B:3E0A (talk) 06:22, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please provide reliable and verifiable sources for these information; read WP:RS & WP:V! We can't mention any unsourced information even if it is correct; Wikipedia calls it WP:OR. Ekdalian (talk) 07:15, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mitra surname can be traced among nagar Brahmins. The Nidhanpur copperplate inscriptions, issued by King Bhaskaravarman of Kamrup in the 7th century, document a land grant made to several Brahmin families from northern India, particularly from regions such as Kannauj. These plates are significant because they highlight the migration of Brahmin and associated Kayastha groups into the region, which led to shared cultural and social markers, including the adoption of common surnames like Mitra and Dutta among both Bengali Kayasthas and Nagar Brahmins. Sorry, IP, but none of those references are acceptable.
The first, the Arora Khatri Community site, is a self-promotional community site, that does not cite any references whatsoever, but is full of puffery, such as "This is a platform where we can have a glimpse of our glorious history", "the mission of our website is to present our scattered pearls in front of you by stringing them into a garland" ... etc. etc. We need WP:Independent sources, published by a reputable body with a reputation for fact-checking.
The other three references are to Wikipedia, which is NOT a WP:reliable source as explained at WP:RSPWP.
Ekdalian explained to you above that you need reliable and verifiable sources that meet WP:RS & WP:V. I suggest you read and follow those policies carefully, or you will have a very frustrating time trying to edit Wikipedia. - Arjayay (talk) 12:24, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request to Avoid Caste/Clan Information on Mitra Surname Page

[edit]

Can we request to keep this page solely for listing notable people with the Mitra surname, rather than making it a page about the caste or clan associated with this name"?

It also aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines, which generally prefer keeping surname pages focused on notable individuals unless there is a strong, well-sourced reason to include additional social or cultural details. 2409:4065:C9B:8198:0:0:1E4B:6A15 (talk) 15:20, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We respect your opinion, but please read WP:REMOVAL! I don't understand the logic behind removal of sourced content, which provides more information to our readers! Thanks. Ekdalian (talk) 17:22, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is to bring to your consideration Mr Ekdalian the Guha page previously contained similar information but was adjusted to focus on notable individuals rather than caste or clan detail and we would like the same treatment with the related Mitra surname page.
There shouldn't be inconsistency between Guha and Mitra surname pages and selective approach in dealing these to similar cases should be avoided.
We urge for a standard approach to surname pages especially in this case where both Mitra and Guha related kayastha caste deserve same treatment to ensure fairness and to promote inclusivity.
Therefore, we urge the admins to take necessary steps as requested ASAP. 2409:4065:CB2:A05F:0:0:1E4B:9513 (talk) 06:10, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This looks like a "tit for tat" response to the thread immediately above, where an extremely similar IP wanted to include unsourced/unreliably sourced claims, which were refused. They now appear to be trying to remove the reliably sourced information, rather than find reliable sources for their claims. - Arjayay (talk) 10:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
