about the use of term "black" for Atebe's ethnicity
[edit]The reason I chose "black" over "African Canadian", or "person of African descent" is that the latter phrase may not be - probably not is - accurate at all, as many people have partial African lineage who are not visibly "black"; "African Canadian" perhaps; probably best to consult Atebe himself on what he would prefer, I guess. As for the first black mayor in Canada thing, that was the bumpf on the news today but there was some doubt about it, as no one had checked; not sure about Nova Scotia or eastern towns but of course it can be changed anyway. UPDATE: in today's paper it was clarified that Atebe is Canada's second black mayor; the first was Coquitlam's Len Traboulay (Port Coquitlam?).Skookum1 05:24, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Len Traboulay is definitely PoCo not Coquitlam —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.180.218.83 (talk) 02:47, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Accidentally doubled information
[edit]It's late; just a note if anyone notices; my recent additions mirror stuff I already put in a lower section; I'll re-read the whole page and fix 'er up in the next day or two....Skookum1 07:18, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Note on Neighbourhoods and street/road names
[edit]If I scratched my head a bit I think I'd come up with one or two more, just as I added Clay Road post-facto from the rest; Silverdale Road comes to mind, sometimes called Silver Creek towards its eastern end; then there's Nelson Road (where the old golf course is). It's also a conundrum that those that live along the top of that road might say they live in Silverhill, even though the road leads down the Silverdale and kids from up there go to Silverdale school (or did in my day); and the upper part of Anderson Road, off of Hayward Road, is part of Silverhill even though you get to it from Silverdale...and the top end of Silverhill, the western end of Keystone Road, is most likely to be described as part of the latter even though it's only a block from Malquist at Wolfe Roads, which is definitely Silverhill. Then there's a distinction between Ruskin Dam, the mobile home parks, and the Wilson Road area above the dam, and the Dewdney Trunk west of Wilson, all of which would call themselves "Ruskin" (although those of us from the dam would probably always qualify it as "Ruskin Dam"); making it all the trickier with other Missionites because, other than those from Silverdale, Silverhill and Stave, other people from Mission assume the boundary with Maple Ridge is the Stave River and people from Ruskin are "actually" from Maple Ridge, which isn't the case. And in Maple Ridge, there's a term "Upper Ruskin" which refers to the Ruskin plateau area, i.e. up 280th towards Iron Mountain (up 32nd and 33rd in the old street-numbers). The whole Silverhill/Silverdale/Keystone thing is about to get seriously messed up because of Genstar's development of the area, of course (which originally left all those names off the map and imposed some imported-marketing names....grrrr). Silverdale Road the farther east you went, also, tended to be called Old Silverdale Road (actually the old River Road, before the dyking of what is now Silverdale Flats - another "neighbourhood" name).
My other point about the neighbourhoods list is I've used the old street-names, i.e. Clay Road instead of Clay Street, Keystone Road instead of Keystone Avenue, Richards Road instead of Richards Avenue, and so on. Likewise, Cherry Hill was named/short for Cherry Hill Road, which is now Cherry Avenue. All of us older Missionites bewail the loss of Cedar Valley Road (for Cedar St), Stave Lake Road (for Stave St.), Dewdney Trunk Road (for Dewdney St./Ave., depending on which way it's oriented at that point). Even Wilson Street, which I was raised on as Wilson Road, just doesn't sound right. Getting rid of the "road" names was supposed to make us more sophisticated; I think it robbed us of something myself. So I've stuck with the historic names, which is still how people refer to the communities focussed on certain roads (depending on how long they've been in Mission). Also, I imagine there are names for the upper area of West Heights, i.e. the rectangle between 7th, Cedar (Valley), and Cherry (Hill), east of Wren, but I'm not familiar with them. Within Mission City there might have been some neighbourhood names, but usually you'd say where someone's house was by which elementary school was in the area, e.g. Windebank (Stave Lake @ 7th).Skookum1 17:44, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
fine...
[edit]"Mission's city sister is Oyama, Japan."
This was edited out because it was too minor. Well then, where would you put it? I leave it to you. mimithebrain 15:07, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- There's usually a sister city section/tempalte on most city pages; I'll try and find it; maybe it goes in the infobox?Skookum1 (talk) 16:20, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Ethnic breakdown table
[edit]It's my intention to do an ethnic breakdown table for Mission like the one I just made for Abby: see Abbotsford, British Columbia#Table of ethnic groups. It took hours so it might be a day or two yet...partly because I have to find the data again, it's not in the same place at StatsCan as Abby's.Skookum1 (talk) 16:20, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Looking for Birds Eye View Map
[edit]Hi, I see a close-up on neighborhoods, but it would be nice to have a distant map of, say, BC in its entirety, and a small dot for perspective to see where Mission is in relation to other large BC cities. Kristinwt (talk) 12:36, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Japanese Canadians
[edit]Noticeably missing so far is anything on the large Japanese logging and farming community here prior to WWII....I don't have Andreas Schroeder's book handy, which has lots of detail on it. Not that that's the only bit missing from the history section, but like all BC town articles this one requires significant expansion/improvement.Skookum1 (talk) 01:07, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- For honesty's sake, let's remember that the Japanese were interned and robbed of their holdings.Calmcanuck 02:57, 1 March 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Calmcanuck (talk • contribs)
- Did I say they weren't?? You're welcome to add material on that if you have reliable sources to quote from, but bear in mind WP:POV and WP:SOAP when doing so.Skookum1 (talk) 04:08, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
Demographics
[edit]The page says the demographic breakdown is almost 98% white and 5.1% indo-canadian. That does not add up to me. 103% population??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.92.118.243 (talk) 23:21, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- fixed quite a while ago, it seems.Skookum1 (talk) 05:28, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
French immersion in "Anglophone" schools
[edit]Re this, the person adding that seems unaware that French immersion, I think k-12, is available through the Mission school district; which also offers courses in Punjabi, German and more. "Anglophone" is a Quebec usage and not appropriate for BC schools or populations.Skookum1 (talk) 05:24, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
