SPLC

"The SPLC has criticized the Institute for its "interest in neo-Confederate themes", which SPLC considers to be a form of racism."

While I can see that "interest in neo-Confederate themes" might betray interest in racism or connection with racist groups, I cannot begin to see how "interest in neo-Confederate themes" is itself racist.

Of course, I acknowledge that this might not be an accurate summary of the SPLC's position.

But it smacks of smearing by association. The work of the LvMI has nothing to do with race, there are virtually no references to race in their enormous output, and in my opinion anyone familiar with their ideology would probably regard the idea that they could even be considered to be racists as very, very silly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cagliost (talkcontribs) 10:24, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I've read the talk page and can see that the general issue of racism has come up already. I'm going to remove the claim that the "which SPLC considers to be a form of racism" because I can't source it.

I'm considering reducing the mentions of the SPLC or even removing it altogether. Since the SPLC do not consider the LvMI racist or a "hate group", I don't really see why it's notable, even having read the talk page. cagliost (talk) 10:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

It does seem a bit long. I restored one small bit that just needed a source, but I think most of the issues with the SPLC vis a vis neo-Confederate issues are better handled in one of those articles. Political Dweeb and the LvMI of Japan

This organization which is known for promoting the Austrian school of economics and forms of libertarianism has its headquarters in the United States of America but also has other branches of itself in other countries in the world. Of the many branches it has in the world there is a Ludwig von Mises Institute of Japan, which can also be translated into Japanese here.

One of the ideologies that this think tank, the Ludwig von Mises Institute has is an “outlook” that is “paleolibertarian”.In one of this think tank’s magazines called “Liberty” that was volume 3 number 3, there were some ideas at the end of a list of what represented Paleolibertarianism. In particular the Judeo-Christian tradition and what liberty magazine described as “social authority that is the family, church, community, and other intermediating institutions”. For any country that a branch of the Ludwig von Mises Institute think tank is in fromEcuador,Japanand Brazilthose ideas of family, church, community combined with civil liberties, private property and the free market may be used in any of those places. However The Liberty magazine showed one other idea that Paleolibertarianism represents which is “Western civilization.” on Page “37”

My thought here is that I think that Paleolibertarian’s believe that western civilization means Canada, American, Europe and maybe even Russia yet I do not think the Japanese branch of the Ludwig von Mises Institute would not be able to promote the values of western civilization in Japan because that would be a completely different identity.

So my question here is this. Does this mean that the Ludwig von Mises Institute of Japan would promote not Western civilization but the Eastern world which may be synonymously called Eastern civilization?

Good question. I think that the LvMI supports personal liberty and limited government in whatever country they are based in (none of the institutes in various countries have direct affiliation with each other, but they share a common philosophy). I do not think that LvMI is a supporter of Western Civilization over other Cultures per-se (Though they do get a lot of publicity for championing the limited government, market based economy of the early U.S. history in the pre Civil War period) Their main emphasis is Austrian economics, which aligns with classical liberalism in political theory.--  Novus  Orator  01:11, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Founder's views are relevant to organization he founded and ran

In this edit a large block of text was removed that presented information about the views of the founder of this organization, a man who is also its former longtime president, and its current chairman, and who, having acted in those three capacities, has probably had more influence on its policies and agenda than any other person. I don't know whether it would be strictly accurate to state that he controls the organization, but he either exerts or has exerted an extraordinary degree of control over it, and his publicly stated views are unquestionably relevant to understanding the nature of the organization.

For these reasons I've restored the deleted text, in this edit. This constitutes a "revert", which puts us at the "Discuss" stage of WP:BRD. I see, however, that the editor who made the deletion has argued at length, above, that the founders' views are not particularly relevant to this article. I do not anticipate that it would be productive to merely regenerate a fresh transcript of that argument with him here, however, and don't intend to do so at any very considerable length. If this reversion is disputed my expectation would be that it would be more productive to solicit third-party opinions on the question, earlier rather than later, if we can't come to closure over the matter fairly quickly, in order to resolve any such dispute.  – OhioStandard (talk) 20:54, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

If the motivation is to present a neutral point of view then the section in which this passage occurs needs to be very considerably expanded, not chopped down. Further, this passage is one of the very few in the article that draws from a source that's even marginally independent of the Institute or the founder's website, and that's something that we need much, much more of in this article. I looked quickly through the first 50 refs it presents, at present, and my first impression was that almost all of them come either directly from the Institute, from a site affiliated with it, or from another Libertarian site. This seems anything but NPOV to me, and would also seem to preclude any sort of "undue weight" argument, as well. Very much to the contrary, actually: As I hope I've made clear, it's my strong impression that this article places undue weight on the Institute's own sources, and would greatly benefit, both in its overall quality and in its adherence to NPOV, by the introduction of material from unaffiliated sources. I haven't bothered to look, because this article isn't really a priority for me, but surely the Institute must have received more independent coverage than is represented in the article in its current state.  – OhioStandard (talk) 14:42, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree that this article could be improved, generally speaking, by the addition of independent sources. However, this does not mean that we can engage in original research in our efforts to include such independent sources. Unless the sources cited actually talk about the Mises Institute, we are talking about synthesis of multiple sources (a form of original research). DickClarkMises (talk) 15:31, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
The Reason source does identify Rockwell as "Mises Institute founder." It also mentions that Timo Virkala said that Jeff Tucker was an "assistant, probably a writer" involved in the Ron Paul fundraising newsletters, and that Tucker holds a position with the Mises Institute. Both Rockwell's and Tucker's affiliations seem to be offered in the Reason article for purposes of identification, not because there is any verifiable institute involvement in the Ron Paul newsletters. I'm not sure that I understand why this material belongs in an article about the Mises Institute, a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization that does not engage in electioneering, lobbying, or political fundraising. If the encyclopedia is asserting or implying that the Mises Institute was involved in such activities, that seems a rather serious claim given the legal/tax consequences of that for a non-profit, tax exempt organization. If these claims do not go so far, I think the inclusion of this material amounts to a "claim [about a living person] that rel[ies] on guilt by association..." The BLP policy you mention is for claims about living persons, not about organizations. The balance of your objections seem to me reiterate your view that you've already stated above, that the founder's views are not relevant to the organization he founded and ran, and that he continues to influence as chairman of the board. As I've said, I doubt that it will be productive to re-argue that question with you; I'd prefer not to have to escalate it, but I suppose we can ask for uninvolved opinions on that point if necessary.  – OhioStandard (talk) 21:37, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
The BLP policy applies in all articles that cover living persons, whether the article topic is a particular individual or an organization. Obviously, this article is about the Mises Institute. However, insofar as the article discusses living persons as relevant to that organization, the BLP policy applies to that discussion. For more on this, see Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Where_BLP_does_and_does_not_apply ("BLP applies to all material about living persons anywhere on Wikipedia, including talk pages, edit summaries, user pages, images, and categories."). Naturally, I would be delighted if many disinterested editors weighed in on this question, but the policy seems fairly clear. To be clear, I am not arguing that the Mises Institute is so small that discussion of it necessarily implicates particular individuals, as anticipated in the section of the BLP policy I linked above ("A harmful statement about a small group or organization comes closer to being a BLP problem than a similar statement about a larger group; and when the group is very small, it may be impossible to draw a distinction between the group and the individuals that make up the group."). My BLP concerns here are with the reference to Tucker as a possible writer of the Ron Paul newsletters. There is only a single source that asserts that, and that source only asserts that Tucker was "probably a writer." I can assure you that I take our BLP policies at least as seriously as you do, but I'm confused. Apologies for my slow reply here, but did I miss some edit about Tucker? I ask because I don't see any mention of him in our current article at all in connection with Ron Paul. Was that just edited out? If not, you're not putting forward the idea that it somehow violates Wikipedia's BLP policies to cite the Reason article because it mentions Tucker in that connection, I hope?  – OhioStandard (talk) 11:42, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
I can't find the diff showing its removal, but I could have sworn there was a mention of Tucker in the Ron Paul newsletter material in this article at some point. I don't believe that the BLP policy prevents us from citing the Reason article in general. "BLP applies to all material about living persons anywhere on Wikipedia," not to material elsewhere. libertarians?

Maybe some facts about this institute should be underlined. The institute is run by catholic social conservatives. Members of the institute have a track record of racism and bigotry. Some of them advocate monarchy and theocracy. I wasn't aware that it is run by Catholics. I have yet to see this mentioned in their output, and I have not inferred it from their output. Therefore I fail to see how it is relevant.

No member of the Ludwig Von Mises Institute advocates monarchy nor theocracy, this claim is simply false. Hans-Herman Hoppe says only that there are relative advantages to monarchy over democracy, but he is not a monarchist at all, he is an anarchist. In truth, Mises.org is unabashedly anarchist, indeed even minarchist thought advocated by Hayek, Jefferson, and Mises is shunned at the Institute. Simply read the opinions of the principle faculty members and administrators to confirm this fact. For example, the majority of the faculty and administrators are followers of Murray Rothbard who himself was a rigid anarchist. Mission of the LvMI

It reads in the section, "Mission and activities" that "[t]he Institute's stated goal is to 'undermine statism in all its forms'."

But there's no citation to support the claim, and as far as I can tell, someone just made it up and inserted it into the article. However, one can find the following mission statement at http://mises.org/about.aspx:

"It is the mission of the Mises Institute to place human choice at the center of economic theory, to encourage a revival of critical historical research, and to advance the Misesian tradition of thought through the defense of the market economy, private property, sound money, and peaceful international relations, while opposing government intervention as economically and socially destructive."

Obviously, the quote given in the article is not found in what I quoted from LvMI's website or, for that matter, anywhere at the website. And it does not follow from the published mission statement. Rothbard wrote in a biography (http://mises.org/about/3248) about Mises that Mises was "a rationalist and an opponent of statism in all its forms". The trouble is that Rothbard neither speaks as the authority of the LvMI nor are his words about Mises necessarily correct.

The quoted phrase, "undermine statism in all its forms", can not be plausibly attributed to the LvMI. Unlike Murray Rothbard, Ludwig von Mises was a lifelong statist who longed for a strong league of nations to replace the League of Nations, which he regarded as a sham and which was established about eight years before he wrote Liberalismus. In fact, in that book (1927) he not only sneered at antistatists, i.e. those who think that all government is false and immoral, but devoted a whole section to clamoring for a Weltüberstaat, as he put it in German. (See p. 132, III. Liberale Außenpolitik, 10. Der Völkerbund. Ralph Raico's translation into English, available at the LvMI's website, is adequate to appreciate these points.) It so happened that Mises regarded establishment of a Weltüberstaat as a critical component of his economic thinking. He also regarded it as essential to peaceful international relations, a fact that you can gather from Raico's translation of the passage in which Weltüberstaat is found. There, Mises wrote that:

"This permits us to hope that from these extremely inadequate beginnings a world superstate really deserving of the name may some day be able to develop that would be capable of assuring the nations the peace that they require."

Furthermore, when Liberalismus was translated into English during the 1960s, Mises did not repudiate either his hostility to antistatism or his advocacy for Weltüberstaat. So, if we are going to have unsupported quotes that are purported to be the LvMI's mission, a far more plausible statement of its mission would read "to establish a world government" or, quoting Raico's translation, "to establish 'a world superstate really deserving of the name'". This would be consistent with Mises' own desire for a world government and the LvMI's own affirmation of advancing "the Misesian tradition of thought through the defense of the market economy" and "peaceful international relations".

Institute description

In keeping with the D of WP:BRD, the following is submitted: The intro/about section of the LvMI website does not use the term 'anarcho-capitalism'. Rather, it says: "You have found the world center of the Austrian School of economics and libertarian political and social theory." I too think this is the best way to handle it. On the subject, as I have said on my talk page, the proposed content seems poorly sourced (a blog entry) and constitutes a violation of WP:NPOV (of course in my opinion).

I meant to say, "Some have been tagged for a long time and [those that have been tagged for a long time] should be deleted if no RS can be found to support them." Nothing was deleted. Presumably editors have searched in vain for sources in the time the tag has been up. At some point, we pull the plug on long-tagged content.
The "about" page link works for me but I don't see any text there to support "Rothbard was a prominent influence on the Institute's early activities" so I changed it to conform to the source. Of the 3 tags, I modified one to resolve the syntax. The other old one is probably unneeded because the paragraph is a summary which says LvMI likes/doesn't like these ideas, which are numerous. While they are generally described, if there are particular topics that LvMI does not opine on, those subjects can be removed. But a review of the article and LvMI's editorial stance should support removal. For example, if LvMI is critical of communism or other isms, the paragraph/sentence/phrase is proper. Notable scholars section

We need to create one of these to show our readers some of the notable figures who have contributed to the Institute. Two of the more well-known Mises Scholars are Joseph Sobran and Sam Francis, both of whom were prominent conservative journalists for years. Maybe "noteworthy"? It's more or less a synonym of "notable", but it doesn't have the same policy-based connotation.
By the way: I also think we should in our list of noteworthy scholars provide their institutional affiliation (meaning those institutions which said scholars have done academic work for and associated with over an extended period of time). For example, next to the name Walter Block, we'd list Loyola University New Orleans; next to Joseph Sobran and James J. Martin, we'd list The Institute for Historical Review; next to Hans-Hoppe, we'd list University of Nevada, Las Vegas; next to Thomas Woods we'd list Suffolk County Community College and League of the South; next to Thomas DiLorenzo we'd list the League as well as Loyola University, Baltimore; next to Sam Francis we'd list The Council of Conservative Citizens and so forth. Importance of non-web accessible sources

I note that, in the article by Prof. Horwitz here: [3], he refers to a body of writing by Mises Institute-affiliated authors which has not been archived on the web. It will be important to research and cite those publications as we develop the history and intellectual traditions of the Mises Institute. I have not located a source for the printed materials, but I have a few leads in mind. I hope that others will join in the search. SPECIFICO talk 03:04, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Paleolibertarian support for LvMI edits (BRD)

I removed this piece from Reason about the writing of the Ron Paul Newsletters; other than mentioning LvMI, it does not discuss the institution. See: [4]. User:MilesMoney reverted here: [5]. With WP:BRD in mind, how is it that Sanchez and Weigel are saying that paleolibertarians supported the founding of LvMI? But you are making an illogical stretch. E.g., A: 'Rockwell was PL'. B: 'Rockwell founded LvMI'. Therefore C: 'PLs/the PL movement supported/founded LvMI.' He is worshiped as the god of the PLs. Virgins (male and female) are sacrificed to him regularly in both public and private PL ceremonies. And LvMI is the secret headquarters of the PL movement where they secretly implant biochips in the various people who happen to take courses or simply drop by. glasses Seriously it does not matter what Rothbard's role was with the PLs. This article is about LvMI, not Rockwell or the PLs. We have RS that describes his role with LvMI, and we can use that RS. But using other RS that describes his PL leanings, leadership, philosophy, etc., and which does not directly support article text about LvMI, is improper. (And as stated above, the mere fact that Sanchez & Weigel mention Rockwell as the founder of LvMI does not mean they say the "paleo libertarian movement which supported the founding of" LvMI. They mention the January 1992 Report (LvMI was founded 1982), but does that report talk about LvMI? Moreover, their article is about the Ron Paul Newsletters. We cannot use it.) – S. I object to the entire passage. It seeks to address PL-movement support for LvMI, but the reference provided does not document such support. It only says Rothbard was PL and had founded LvMI. The reference cited – Jonah Goldberg – talks about Doherty, but Goldberg does not even mention LvMI. So how does that reference work to directly support anything about LvMI? Murphy blog as RS for article (BRD)

In this diff [8], I removed the Robert Murphy blog citation as SPS. The removal was reverted here [9]. With the WP:BRD process in mind, I open the discussion with the following points supporting removal of the Murphy citation:

  1. The citation is Robert Murphy's "personal blog" [10] and is WP:SPS.
  2. Murphy is an economist and his relevant field is economics.
  3. The cited page is not about the subject of economics. It discusses his personal history with Mises.org and various people associated with it. Accordingly, he is not discussing something within his area of expertise.
  4. Simply having had experiences with LvMI & its people does not qualify him as an expert. Nor has his work about LvMI been published by reliable third party publications.
  5. As the blog entry is discussing living third parties, the restrictions of WP:ABOUTSELF apply.
  6. Other than being an adjunct scholar with LvMI and having his work published by LvMI, I find nothing that shows Murphy having any official role in the administration of LvMI.

Neo confederate & SPS criticisms (BRD)

In this edit [11] SPECIFICO reverted several changes I made.

  1. Jeffrey Tucker is removed as a key person. (While not specified in the article, there is RS to support this, which can be and will be supplied. Added comment: I recall, per SPLC, he was research director. Not a big deal. But SPECIFICOs revert was wholesale and these other BRD criticisms remain. 03:48, 15 September 2013 (UTC))
  2. SPLC has certainly "criticized" LvMI as neo confederate, thus this remark belongs in the criticism section.
  3. The SPLC paragraph was combined with other SPLC remarks. They do not use the term "far right", and my edit quoted the exact term they used – "hard right". (I do read the material.)
  4. One SPLC reference does use the term neo confederate, but the other does not. (In any case, repeating the SPLC allegation of LvMI as neo confederate twice is UNDUE.)
  5. They do use the term "anti-immigrant", which I added (and SPECIFICO deleted).
  6. The characterization of Rothbard's view as "anti-lesbian", because he used the term lesbian in a commentary (whether favorably or not) does not make him an anti-lesbian. Saying so is OR.
  7. SPECIFICO's edits also disrupt the citation improvements I made.

  1. If you are concerned by "wholesale revert" please don't make several unrelated edits in a single bundle. In this case each element of my revert was appropriate.
  2. SPLC does not state that this is a criticism, it is their description. "Criticism" is your interpretation.
  3. The text does not quote the term "far-right" to be SPCL's exact words. The meaning is clear and ordinary English usage.
  4. Again, you mis-state the facts. The article does not repeat the SPLC "neoconfederate" statement. The word neo-confederate occurs for the second time in the context of Gene Callahan's remarks in support of Rockwell.
  5. Your representation of SPLC's view could be read as disparaging of vMI scholars who are not "anti-immigrant" and a more specific treatment already occurs in the article text.
  6. Again you misrepresent the cited reference, which details a pattern of blame placed on diverse individuals whom Rothbard tags as "lesbian".
  7. Wouldn't it be grand if you'd reflect on whether that comment is constructive and strike it?

While sometimes helpful, there is no template requirement that pending edits be explained. Earlier edit summaries said more work was needed and to be done. Undoing the work that had been done by not waiting for 2 hours and 9 minutes before getting into the pending work, and then removing the template is, putting it as politely as possible, hardly cooperative editing. – S. The Boettke article does use the term polemist to describe Rothbard, but I don't think it talks about "the split". In this regard, it does not directly support the material presented. The better description of Rothbard is the one in his article -- political theorist & economist. "Libertarian" can get thrown in too because it is used in the first sentence of Rothbard's lede. But adding the mention of this aspect of Rothbard's resume is WP:UNDUE. The article is about LvMI and this is a side issue. The Boettke paper serves Rothbard up as a libertarian economist and theorist. Boettke's personal opinion comes forward to say that he thinks Rothbard is not a true Austrian economist but a property rights economist. Neither of these Boettke opinions are solid enough to remove Rothbard from the category of Austrian economists or libertarians as opposed to someone who might be a career polemicist without portfolio. Boettke does not define Rothbard primarily as a polemicist and nobody else does, either.

This thread is not opened to discuss the issues involved in the RSNs. Rather, I point out that tagging the citations (or section) as {{SPS}} is proper because doing so serves to alert readers as to the on-going disputes and discussions. The discussions were first opened on this talk page and moved to the RSN. (Also, the tags serve to categorize the articles in as having disputed content.) Perhaps the essays WP:TAGGING and WP:DT will be helpful. "Dispute templates are used to alert other editors that work is needed on a certain article, and auto-categorize pages so that patrolling editors can aid their talent to the problem." But if they are not there readers will not see that a dispute is on-going and the auto-categorization will not occur. "Faculty" in infobox (BRD)

The article infobox had a line with the number of "adjunct scholars" (63) listed in the infobox as "adjunct faculty". This was removed in a Bold edit. The edit was Reverted, partially, by using the template parameter of "faculty" and put in the number 16, based on the listing found on the LvMI webpage. As LvMI has teaching programs (accredited or not) conducted by university professors, this is an appropriate entry. The question is one of WP editing – whether or not "faculty" is an appropriate term/parameter for this infobox. RS is a secondary issue, if at all. LvMI is the source of the info and while primary, it is reliable enough to use in this context. (E.g, we have no reason to doubt whether courses are offered or whether the instructors are university professors.) As these people are university professors who are offering courses of varying complexity or worth, describing these people, who conduct these courses, as "faculty" is proper. Also, if one of the "notable" schools in the List of unaccredited institutions of higher education had a faculty headcount in their article based on their webpage, we would not reject the figure simply based on accreditation status. This NPOV editing evaluation is especially pertinent for those religious schools who eschew formal accreditation. (EW – moi? Indeed not! That is why I am the one who opened this BRD.) – S. If it's not accredited then it doesn't matter if "real" professors are teaching. Accreditation is given to schools, not teachers. The school is responsible for ensuring that the teachers follow the requirements, not the other way around. In short, your argument just doesn't make any sense. But there is no criteria by which we can judge whether LvMI is providing "real" educational services or not. Indeed, adding education-related categories to the article may be appropriate – but I am not advocating anything in that regard. Rather, the question is about using the term "faculty" in the infobox. The template provides for the line, but without parameters. E.g., there is no requirement at only accredited institutions get to use the "faculty" parameter. So, again, compare – if there are religious teaching institutions that have "faculty" without having been accredited, we would be infringing on NPOV to say "You are an unaccredited religious teaching institution, therefore you cannot use the term "faculty" to describe your teaching staff!" Similarly, the Bisexual Resource Center is described as a "educational" organization. What if they offered classes on various LGBT related topics? Would we declare that they could not list a number for their "faculty" count (if the article had an infobox)? I realize that I am building hypothetical upon hypothetical (i.e., no infobox for an educational institution that may or may not offer classes). But what if they did? The point is that LvMI does offer classes, and those classes are taught by real professors, and LvMI does list them as faculty. Srich, you are advocating a clear violation of WP policy. We do not use primary sources or self-description for anything other than obvious facts which would be apparent to any observer. The Mises.org website contains a variety of material, ranging from archives of documents published by third parties to self-serving promotional statements about the Mises Institute and its affiliates. We need to find an independent WP:RS which states that certain Mises Institute employees function as "faculty" of the Mises Institute. The RS must be qualified as to the assertion for which you propose to cite it. Without such a source, WP can not call them faculty. You have a simple remedy. There is no violation of policy. Primary sources can be used. We would not question the source for the number of employees or key people, and there is no reason to question the number of people who teach there. The issue in this thread concerns whether or not we should use the word "faculty" in the infobox. I argue that they have classes conducted by PhDs. Also, they have on-line learning (but I have not gotten into that.) I argue that other teaching institutions do not have accreditation (for whatever reason) and it would be proper to include a faculty count in the infobox. The institution infobox has an undefined parameter for faculty, so perhaps that needs to change. As for secondary sources, if we find something that describes LvMI as an educational institution, then the description will be met. Along the same lines, if we find material about think tanks (which term has been used to describe LvMI) as educational institutions, then the criteria will be met. – S. With this in mind, the WP:BURDEN is on you to establish that the Callahan material should be included. While you may not patrol WP for RPPs, I do think this page is on your watchlist. If that is the case, then you would have seen my RPP before adding the material. Former Mises scholar repudiates Institute as "cult"

RS Gene Callahan of Cardiff University used to be a prominent "scholar" of the Institute. Now he has repudiated it as a cult akin to scientology, which is a very reasonable comparison.

Since Callahan (per his publications, Ph.D., etc) is an RS and knows the Institute intimately from an "insider" perspective, this seems to be a relevant criticism of the Institute. So I added it. Secondly, the opining of whether a group is a cult is more of a sociologist's or psychologist's job. Without looking at Callahan's CV etc, I'd guess he does not qualify in this regard. (In lawsuits, the plaintiffs and defendants, persons and non-persons, are parties. Ad hominem remarks are personal attack. Describing an institution (such as the Church of Scientology) as a "cult" is not a personal attack but rather an abstract description of that institution. It is your value judgment that cults are bad; such a value judgment is not entailed by the definition of "cult". @Srich: SR, ad hominem is the use of a disparaging personal statement about a writer, where such personal disparagement is used instead of (and as if it were) a refutation of the facts or theories stated by the writer. You've misused the term here. This is not an article about a theory, for example Austrian Business Cycle Theory, espoused by vMI Fellows. If, in that article one were to say "Malinvestment is just another example of the cult malarkey swampcrud from those wingnut backscratchers" -- well then: That would be an ad hominem. But this article is describing the Institute itself, its operations and its activities. The opinion of an insider who left the vMI and his reasons for doing so are directly relevant to an understanding of the institution. They are one man's opinion and presented as such, but they are not an oblique or logically illegitimate attack on the research or theories of the vMI Fellows. This is not an ad hominem fallacy. It was an ad hominem attack, since Rich was singling out some (supposedly biased/unobjective) element of my personal character as germane to the issue at hand. Conversely, saying "Scientology is a cult" or "Marxism is a cult" is not a personal attack on Scientologists/Marxists. Again, it's your value judgment and not a fact that cults are bad and that membership in a cult reflects badly on an individual. (For instance, I think the U.S. military is cultish but (criticisms of its diminishing but still striking homophobia and transphobia and sexism aside) certainly have respect for the institution, and acknowledge the necessity of its "cultishness". The issue is not whether LvMI or the people associated with it are cultist, a cult, cult members, or even whether they throw great keggers. The issue is the source. If Callahan had published some non-blog material saying they were a cult, we could use it. But the material is in his personal blog. He is a published expert in the field of economics, so blog comments about economics can be used. But he is talking about his personal experiences with the people at LvMI, not the field of economics. While certain RS commentators may have opinions about individuals being members of a cult, it is WP:SYN to say LvMI is a cult. E.g., they are saying A: "This person is a member of a cult". The implication of including such material – which WP:SYN prohibits – is that the Institution and people associated with it are members of a cult. The view (of Selgin and Ferrra) about Rothbard may have relevance in the Rothbard article, but not here because their views do not directly support the implications involved. – S.
