[edit]I couldn't find absolutely nothing about "G Tanzolini". Can somebody help me? Is this name right? --Leonardo T. de Oliveira 06:39, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I'll try to develop this article a bit. I've included frag 1 (with kalon rather than kakon in line 6) and translated it. I used no substituted feet for the elegy but only the full or 'ideal' form. I thinks that's the only way to get the form across to readers in the English with its stress-based meter. What the translation loses in punch it gains in the elegance of the full elegiac form. The ancients got both form and punch but we can only aim for one or the other. References I'll use
- David A. Campbell, Greek Lyric Poetry, Bristol Classical Press (1982)
- Douglas E. Gerber, Greek Elegiac Poetry, Loeb (1999)
- P.Easterling and B.Knox (eds), The Cambridge History of Classical Literature: Greek Literature, Cambridge University Press (1985)
- J.Boardman, J.Griffin and O.Murray (eds), The Oxford History of the Classical World, Oxford University Press (1995)
And from Googling:
- Martin L. West, Studies in Greek Elegy and Iambus, Walter de Gruyter and Co. (1974)
- Douglas E. Gerber, A Companion to the Greek Lyric Poets, Brill (1997)
- some journal papers to support some points.
That's the plan so far. McZeus (talk) 06:08, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Propertius's Remark I rather like to translate this as "A line of Mimnermus is of greater love-value than (ie all of) Homer". Esedowns (talk) 00:04, 9 August 2021 (UTC) (formerly Seadowns)
