Miltown Malbay
[edit]As the name of the town is just Miltown Malbay, the spelling should be corrected in the title of the page. I don't know where someone got the idea that there is a second L but there is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:182:4381:E60:2DCA:8EF1:7382:5EBA (talk) 18:24, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
I was just coming here and noticing the same thing. The name of this page is misspelled. There is no also spelled as: ____ . It is only Miltown Malbay in English and is currently misspelled.2601:182:4381:E60:75E8:70ED:32C9:D65E (talk) 20:17, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- If you want to start a discussion on changing the name, the best way is to go through the process outlined at Wikipedia:Requested moves. However, at the moment, I would be inclined not to move. On logainm it's spelled in English as Milltown Malbay. The electoral division for town is also named as Milltown Malbay. These are both official sources, so there would have to be a good reason not to favour these. Per WP:OFFICIALNAMES, that is not the only basis on which to consider an article title, but a proposal should follow the guidelines in WP:TITLE, specifically "consistent with usage in reliable English-language sources". So if there are good and reliable sources outside of the official sources that use a single L, or competing official sources, do cite these. –Iveagh Gardens (talk) 08:05, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- The point is that a lot of people are misspelling the name, including the local GAA-club. But as you can see at the signs at the entrance of MM, the name is spelled with double L. By the way, the name is derived from the - now gone - watermills in Poulawillin. When Thomas J.Moroney started to develop the area to suit his business and guest (he owned the Atlantic Hotel in Spanish Point), he did not want to accept the name of the settlement around the cross of the roads to Kilfarboy, Inagh and Mullagh (now Canada Cross). That settlement was named Caghryariff (Irish: Cathair Gharbh). So the "Townland of the Mills" became Milltown. The Banner talk 13:40, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
