My dictionary says that a dependent is "a family member or other person who is supported financially by another, especially one living in the same house." Though this may sound similar to what I've posted, it is incomplete and overly broad where the U.S. DoD is concerned.
The DoD reference is absolutely authoritative, quoted exactly and otherwise difficult to find. Furthermore, it provides a valuable service to U.S. military dependents and their broader families. The Wikipedia entry is even included in lists of Family Readiness Group helpful links as a source of clarification and disambiguation.
If this statement does not suffice, I will need a more precise critique of it. As it currently stands it is concise, precise, informative, authoritative and distinct from the more generally understood meanings of "dependent." Saseigel (talk) 11:02, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
