Talk:Milhouse Van Houten/Archive 1
Smart?
[edit]Why does the lead paragraph describe him as smart? I don't think he's ever shown himself to be smart. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:558:6045:78:A8F3:90FC:A85F:AECC (talk) 03:57, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
You're right. In fact at one point when Bart suggests that "You can talk nerd to them" Milhouse objects that "I'm not a nerd! Nerds are smart." Furthermore when Lisa suggests that Milhouse sign a school honour code because she wants the smartest kid to sign it Martin objects that "He's not the smartest kid! I am!" That said, on one occasion Bart relies on Milhouse to interpret Roman Numerals for him with Milhouse being effective in this regard. Thus I would say that Milhouse is smarter than Bart is and that given Bart's circle of friends Milhouse is relatively intelligent.
See Also
[edit]I would like to thank Iggy the Swan for fixing the external link to the Simpsons Wiki. You rectified a grave error on my part. That said, I take exception to Pcock for having deleted the entire See Also. While I accept that some of those recommendations were justifiably removed, I believe total deletion is going too far. The pages on Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Bart Simpson,Lisa Simpson, Maggie Simpson and Nelson Muntz, to name but a few all have See Also at the end of them. Furthermore, some of the deleted parts of Milhouse's See Also, such as school bullying and sidekicks seem to me to be highly relevant. I intend therefore to recreate the See Also this time limiting it exclusively to the relevant parts. If any of you disagree with my list please vocalist your concern in the Talk Page rather than summarily deleting. If any parts are disruptive to the general consensus I assure you I will delete my edits myself. Thank you.
Actually, it turns out the articles about the aforementioned characters don't have See Alsos but they follow the end of the page with a list of related articles. I will check to see if Milhouse has one.
Milhouse does have one which raises the question of why the useless See Also devoid of content. I am not going to delete that, I am not and have never been a deletionist but I would like a discussion of what purpose an empty See Also serves.
Wonder Years
[edit]Is it just me, or was Milhouse based in part on Paul Pfeiffer (played by Josh Saviano) from the Wonder Years?
I always saw the same resembelance. KhlavKhalash (talk) 19:29, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Milhouse's allergens
[edit]One unspecified user listed several of his allergens as "dairy" and "non-dairy." This would make him allergic to every substance known to man, and thus killing off the character (unless he dies of an allergic reaction). --Chapas45 9 December 2006 07:34 (UTC)
- Maybe it means soya (which he drinks without problems in at least one episode)--MartinUK (talk) 21:48, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Milhouse the name
[edit]Given Matt Groening's tendency to name characters after streets in his hometown (Lovejoy, Flanders), more emphasis should be placed on Milhouse's last name as a street rather than the Charles Manson follower. ~~
Female?
[edit]Isn't Milhouse actually a boy? *cry* :) 158.64.137.141 21:16, 3 December 2006 (UTC))
Richard Nixon?
[edit]Is it true that Milhouse's first name was derived from Richard Milhous Nixon's middle name? I could swear that I remember that being said during one of the commentaries from The Simpsons Fourth Season. DinoDan926 00:22, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
I can look it up for you if you want, I have the fourth season on DVD. IncrediVi —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.176.247.138 (talk) 16:35, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
It is true that Milhouse is named after Nixon's middle name. I'm Wyatt Leahy A.K.A. Norbert, I love the Simpsons!

Ethnicity
[edit]Unless I'm mistaken, we only definitively know that Milhouse is Dutch, right? His grandmother living in Italy does not guarantee that he is Italian, and his receiving a gift for a Greek Orthodox holiday is even less convincing; only ethnic Greeks can be Greek Orthodox? I'd propose removing references to his being Italian and Greek as speculation. Thoughts? faithless (speak) 05:12, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I concur Staarkali (talk) 06:22, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Staarkali
Not directly on this subject Milhouse's uncle Norbert says " I'm one of the Dutch Van Houtens not the Danish Van Houtens"

Okay, now I'm curious, because these edits seem to come in bunches, so where is this "Milhouse is a meme"/"Milhouse is not a meme" crap coming from? It's weird because you'll get three or four different anons adding it in a few days, then there will be nothing for a month, then it will come back. Is it simply a user who keeps changing IPs, or is it coming from a forum discussion? -- Scorpion0422 17:25, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm archiving this discussion to discourage people from adding nonconstructive comments. "Milhouse isn't a meme/Milhouse isn't a meme is a meme" is a 4chan meme. That's all there is to it. There's no way to stop the /b/tards from making these edits, all one can do is revert and ignore. faithless (speak) 21:44, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Mussolini?
[edit]..........eeerrr how do we know that he's really called that, I don't think any should be called that, I'm sure you know why King food (talk) 20:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's kind of the joke. There is an episode where Lisa needs to learn Italian - it turns out that Milhouse is fluent in Italian from spending summers in Italy with his grandmother. During a flashback, she scolds him for speaking in English, calling him Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten and 'Idiota' and chases him with an olive branch. faithless (speak) 02:53, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have not seen the English-dubbed episode, only the Italian one: it should be precised that, as it comes out during that episode, Milhouse looks to be able to speak both Italian language (at least by what he says himself) and some Sicilian dialect, but he seems to teach Lisa just the second one and not "real" Italian. Filippo83 (talk) 20:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I've seen that episode but I don't remember him being called that King food (talk) 09:41, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well...watch it again. :-) faithless (speak) 09:47, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I've seen this episode again a couple of hours ago, Milhouse grandma definitively used that name; whether it's a morally good name or not is another question and that belongs to the writters. Staarkali (talk) 06:18, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Staarkali
I have seen the episode some time ago and remember the situation. The woman did call him that way, but the context does not make it clear that's the name: rather than that, it seems that the grandmother was adding the "Mussolini" part to the name in order to emphasize her anger with milhouse for not speaking italian. Besides, a character set as italian using the name of a italian dictator as an insult seems more solid as a plot element than using a full name to emphasize anger.
- Writing from Italy (at least for now...) I can say that no one here intended it as an insult but instead as his second name; and the Italian dubbing leaves no doubt. Anyway, I do not know anyone who would use "Mussolini" as an insult, but for political use only (e.g. he behaves like Mussolini, to mean that he wants all the power). Filippo83 (talk) 20:30, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
If that episode is the sole time the "Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten" name was used, then think it should be removed. MBelgrano (talk) 13:48, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well... it's not the sort of name Milhouse or his parents/friends would use, would they? But since it is part of his name, it should definetely be kept. 94.219.44.103 (talk) 16:25, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, Milhouse, his parents and friends are all fictional characters. They will say or do whatever the script writers want them to. Anyway, the point here is if it's truly "part of his name" or a random speculation based on a quote considered out of context. MBelgrano (talk) 18:16, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for reminding me that Milhouse is a fictional character; however, it does not negate the fact that this name would not be used by his, albeit fictional, friends and family. Also, a (fictional) Italian grandmother is unlikely to express her anger by calling someone Mussolini, as he was very popular and even venerated there in the past. I guess that's why she had her grandson named after him. Of course, to any sensible person, that is hardly acceptable; that is the joke. I'd say keep it; after all, the second name of Hayley Smith is also only mentioned in one episode only; yet it's on Wiki, if only for the sake of completeness. 84.59.161.60 (talk) 08:09, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Since we're in another stretch of continuous edit/revert/edit/revert, it's probably time to discuss it again. Outside of one episode, there has been no mention of "Mussolini" being his middle name. Since The Simpsons has no problems with contradicting itself for the sake of a joke, it would seem that the only sure way to solve this would be for his name to appear in another episode. For example, if Mrs. Krabappel or even his mom got so irate and called him "Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten!", just like his Italian grandmother did, then that would be enough for me to say that's what it is. --McDoobAU93 21:57, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
wet his bed?
[edit]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milhouse_Van_Houten#Skills_and_talents It says that he started learning Italian and wet his bed. Excuse me but how does that have anything to do with anything? 83.90.123.42 (talk) 13:20, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- He said he was chased and whipped by his grandmother every time he speaks English. That was the reason he started to both learn Italian AND wet his bed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.198.33 (talk) 21:04, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Creation
[edit]It should be worth noting that Milhouse was created by Matt Groening for a Butterfingers commercial (he mentions it on a Season 8 DVD) just to give someone for Bart to talk to. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.16.28 (talk) 05:48, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Sexuality
[edit]It says citation needed for Milhouse being asserted as gay or bi, well, can't we cite episodes? Cuz there's an episode (I don't remember the name, but I can find out) that recently was released when Milhouse asserts that Bart, who switched places with Simon, has a "beautiful brother" or something. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.198.122.160 (talk) 00:58, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
No, he said "They are beutyful" when both came and then Bart looks at him making Milhouse to say "Oops I mean only your sister is beutyful" so that imply that he is Bisexual, anyway remember that it is a comedy show so it's just like a joke, not that he is actually bi or gay User:Jak-Esz —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.173.147.73 (talk) 22:31, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
What episode is this from?
[edit]I have a scene in my mind, but I can't find evidence that it actually exists. The family is at the dinner table and Homer is making jokes using Milhouse as a punchline. Marge tells him to stop. Later, she makes a joke that bombs. Homer tells her, "See? It doesn't work without Milhouse."
What is that episode? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jstohler (talk • contribs) 17:53, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Ya, I defiantly remember that, but i don't know what episode it's from74.73.142.163 (talk) 18:05, 25 May 2009 (UTC).
On that subject the page said citation needed after it mentioned that Bart told Milhouse he had a 3:00 wedgie with Nelson and Milhouse replied that he had to reschedule. But that sounds like a very Milhouse thing to say. I believe that he said it but I have no idea what episode. All other internet sources about Milhouse that include this quotation seem to be carbon copies of the Wikipedia page. Does anyone know which episode this interchange transpired in?
According to the Simpsonswiki that interchange took place in the episode "Little Orphan Millie".
