Migros ethic?
Are you sure they don't sell alcohol? I believe I saw an entire alcohol section in a Migros the other day. I'll try and confirm this tomorrow. 83.76.246.203
- They never did and they still don't. Perhaps you were in a Coop.
- You are right, they don't sell alcohol in the actual Migros shops. Seems a bit hypocritical, though, for in big MMM shopping centres, there is often a Denner (or, formerly, a Pick Pay) shop selling alcohol and tobacco - not "officially" part of Migros but on room owned and hired out to Denner by Migros. - I'm pretty sure I've seen alcohol in two Migros stores in Basel. Itub 10:23, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I checked again one of the stores and it turns out it is a "Migros partner" (apparently a sort of franchise; perhaps this should be mentioned in the article). It agree that it is hypocritical to boast that they don't sell alcohol for "ethical reasons", when so many stores under their brand name actually do sell it (whether directly operated by them or not). It might appear hypocritical to boast that they don't sell alcohol for "ethical reasons" today, but this is a legacy from the beginning and foundation of this chain. In fact the reason not to sell alcohol was that people used to tend to spend/loose all their income on alcohol. Hence, at that times alcohol was a serious issue where poverty did reign. So today, Migros profits in a symbolic manner from not selling alcohol as that retailer has given up return of investment for a social reason (actually helping people to get out of poverty). Nowadays, the symbolic meaning is more about the social contribution that retailer has made (and is still doing with various cultural funds). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.126.196.77 (talk) 19:16, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
