Removed from the 'restoration' section of Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, where it is 'excess detail':

Work continues at Midsomer Norton railway station by the Somerset and Dorset Railway Heritage Trust, (established 1994 and with over 800 members)to return it to working order, and begin heritage operations with full sized mainline steam locomotives. This is not planned until the new 1000 feet extension is ready in mid to late 2010 giving 2000 feet of the former down mainline for steam and autocoach working, but since 2005 3 different tank engines have steamed at midsomer norton.

I don't have time to research its validity or reformat it, but have placed it here so it is not 'lost'. -- EdJogg (talk) 12:56, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Midsomer Norton South

[edit]

Where is the reference for the station being called Midsomer Norton South? 2.31.5.128 (talk) 11:19, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Probably in Butt, though I don't have my copy to hand at present. It's also in Railway Atlas Then and Now (Paul Smith & Keith Turner), though that doesn't say when it was renamed.Optimist on the run (talk) 22:23, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, not in Butt. He lists (p. 159) the S&DJ station as: (20 Jul 1874) Midsomer Norton; (16 Oct 1898) Midsomer Norton and Welton; (26 Sep 1949) Midsomer Norton Upper. The GWR station is listed (pp. 244, 159) as: (3 Sep 1873) Welton; (2 May 1898) Welton and Midsomer Norton; (1 May 1904) Midsomer Norton and Welton. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:55, 12 January 2014 (UTC) dates added Redrose64 (talk) 17:40, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ian Allan's 1955 Rail Atlas shows it as being called Midsomer South at that time.Optimist on the run (talk) 17:16, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but only at 3B3. At 8E1 and in the Gazetteer it's Midsomer Norton South. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:26, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do we have a date for the change? Chevin (talk) 17:29, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Showing my ignorance on railway topics... The comment above with all the dates gives me the impression that both the S&DJ station and GWR stations were at some point called "Midsomer Norton and Welton". If this is the case should some clarification be put on Midsomer Norton and Welton railway station for people who might be confused (like me)?— Rod talk 18:31, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if Butt (1995) is correct, the two stations had the same name between 1 May 1904 and 26 September 1949. Per WP:NC (UK stations), we should use Midsomer Norton Upper railway station for the former S&DJ station, and Midsomer Norton and Welton railway station for the former GWR station. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:17, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hatnote added. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:32, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
