Name origin
[edit]The origin given for the name – that floods made Norton inaccessible most of the year – strikes me as, well, reaching too hard. This one isn't a whole lot better:
- said to be so called in allusion to the festival held at midsummer on the day of St. John, the patron saint.
— but at least I can cite it to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-names by Eilert Ekwall, a standard reference. —Tamfang (talk) 17:39, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Norton Canonicorum - although there's the Old Priory, I can't find anything which says that it was a priory and that there was, in fact, a priory at Norton at all. It's not in Dugdale! Merton Priory held the advowson, and it's likely that the Old Priory was a building which belonged to Merton, like a grange - so that the Canonicorum refers to Merton. If anyone's got any more info... (I'll do more research when the libraries are open again)Katiehawks (talk) 16:37, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Martin Grzadkowski
[edit]Can anyone confirm the existence and notability of Ex-Bristol Rovers footballer Martin Grzadkowski (see Notable People section on Midsomer Norton page). I can find no reference to him anywhere else on the Internet. Peteinterpol (talk) 10:39, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- I can't find anything either. Uncited information of questionable notability can be removed.— Rod talk 13:31, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. A contributor to the Bristol Rovers wikipedia page told me they could find no trace of him in the definitive Rovers list of players textbook, so I have removed the entry.

What else is needed to get this article to GA
[edit]I've been editing this article to try to bring it closer to the guidelines at WP:UKCITIES and would be interested in what other editors think is need to get it to meet the Wikipedia:Good article criteria? Obviously we need to expand the lead to summarise the article & reference (or remove) the uncited claims, but is there anything else which would be required?— Rod talk 21:44, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Midsomer Norton Pride
[edit]A significant amount of material is regularly being added by one user on the Pride event that happened on 17-18 June. I am not convinced of Notability of this event and can't see what in the guidance in WP:EVENT would justify the content: it is too early to judge if it will meet the criteria of having a "lasting effect", and the reporting of it does not seem wide enough to meet the "depth of coverage" guidance. There is nothing else in the guidance that supports this level of material in the article. My gut feel is that without wider evidence it is hard to justify a place at all in the article for the event, but I have reduced rather than removed it. It would be good to see what other editors think.
From the tone of the disputed content it may also be that the editor has a close association with the event, in which case the principles of avoiding conflict of interest WP:COI, and maintaining neutrality WP:NPOV may be relevant. Peteinterpol (talk) 05:45, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
- Midsomer Norton Pride is an event that has set a precedent for B&NES, the county of Somerset, but also the movement for LGBTQ+ rights within the UK as it reflects a more recent move to expand Pride events into rural areas. Due to this reason the event was covered in media outlets across the county (Bath Chronicle, Somerset Guardian, Bristol Post, Midsomer Norton and Radstock District Journal, BBC Radio Somerset, BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Points West), but also nationally on Sky News. The significance of the event as historic was also noted by The Mayor of Midsomer Norton, Paul Myers, and the MP for Bath, Ben Howlett.
- Edits to this section reflect a homophobic tendency to underwrite the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals and their struggle for equal rights. It is very strange one editors feels this event deserves less coverage than a song by "The Wurzels."(talk —Preceding undated comment added 10:40, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
- If the comment about "homophobic tendency" is directed at me, I find this extremely offensive and utterly without foundation, as any check of my seven-year Wikipedia editing track record indicates.
- My edits were based on Wikipedia notability guidance. As per my comment above, it is impossible three days after the event to judge whether the historical significance you claim for it meets Wikipedia's "lasting effect" notability guidelines.
- As for the comment on the Wurzels, if you feel that the content on this page relating to that subject requires changing to meet WP guidelines, you are free to do so. Wikipedia is not concerned with what "deserves coverage". It is about what is Notable within its guidelines supported by reliable evidence. Peteinterpol (talk) 11:29, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
- The homophobic comment is aimed at you Peteinterpol because by deleting the section about Midsomer Norton Pride you have made a very strong political statement, homophobic in it's ends if not in its intention, that LGBTQ+ Pride events are not culturally significant.
- It is not "impossible" to judge the historical significance of this event when it has been noted on by almost every significant media outlet in the Somerset area that the event is historic in it's nature.

- Wikipedia guidance suggests that editors should assume good faith on the part of other editors. Please see WP:GF. Calling other editors homophobic is offensive and in breach of that guidance. Peteinterpol (talk) 12:33, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
- WP:EVENT and WP:N are not relevant here - they apply to the creation of separate articles, not content within a single article. Whether this event should be mentioned in this article, and the length of any section about it, depends on the amount of independent coverage it receives in reliable sources, for example in the local press. It certainly seems that it has been covered in the press, and therefore there is a good case for its inclusion. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:54, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Updated Images
[edit]Many of the images on the page are outdated. Unless there is a good objection, I'll be updating these soon, starting with a picture of the recently restored War Memorial. [[1]] Gcmackay (talk) 07:35, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
- Good idea, that first picture is more than 15 years old and things have changed. Peteinterpol (talk) 16:38, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
