[edit]About the merge proposal: These are one and the same person. Most people don't realize he was a playwright as well as an actor. Professionally, he used the middle initial "V." more often. That's how he's listed for example at IMDB. Bruxism 01:23, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

-- I agree too. I'm surprised it hasn't been done by now. These are two articles on the same person. --Mantanmoreland 20:52, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
-- If that is the case, then I completely agree. 68.14.76.151 21:51, 22 April 2006 (UTC) (TaintedMustard)
Well, perhaps somebody should just go ahead and do the merger? I would do so myself but am not sufficiently technically proficient. One has to do "redirects" and so on that are beyond my expertise.--Mantanmoreland 14:12, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Merged and redirected, and corrected other articles to link straight here. I also removed the formatted chart for the filmography, since it's a little overstated for one movie, and most articles don't use that format even for long filmographies. Kafziel 14:24, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Bravo!--Mantanmoreland 22:20, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Copyvio
[edit]This article has now had a copyrighted bio from the Internet Movie Database inserted as the text of the article. I reverted it once without finding the source. I have now reverted the second time because I found the copyrighted source here. His bio does need to be written, and the merge carried out. Not hearing any objection, I will do the merge. The last non-copyvio edit is, while interesting (co-star Salvatore Po is Gazzo's uncle), unsourced. Bruxism 00:35, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Actor/Playwrite
[edit]I'm not a big follower of Gazzo's work, but the IMDB entry seems to contradict this article. We are claiming he was a playwrite first and an actor "later in life". He wrote his first play in 1955, but he had his first acting role in 1953. So, really, it seems like he was an actor who couldn't get any work, and wrote a couple of things to pay the bills. Happens all the time. This idea seems to be reinforced by the fact that the last time he wrote anything at all was in 1969, some spot for Italian TV, and never wrote another play after he had "made it" as an actor. Add to that the fact that he wrote only 1 real play (and an Elvis movie) but acted in 58 different films and TV shows, and it would seem his concentration was more on acting. And, of course, his writing never earned him an award nomination, while his acting did. As I said, I'm not an expert, but there certainly seems to be a discrepancy here. Kafziel 23:30, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Good point, and good catch re his not being an actor at all in the early 1950s -- I don't want to say that and will fix.
However, even though Gazzo certainly pursued work as an actor, he achieved no success whatever. Note that his movie roles pre-1970s are very few and all "bits." However, as a playwright he was a huge success in the 1950s. A Hatful of Rain was a smash hit on Broadway, a major achievement that was a major production of the Actors Studio, and thrust him into the front ranks of American playwrights. However, that being said, he only achieved prominence as an actor in the 1970s. So I'll fix the wording to reflect that he was an actor AND playwright and later became prominent -- now totally accurate. --Mantanmoreland 00:34, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think it looks much better now. Kafziel 01:29, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm going to do a bit more research on his earlier acting career. I am well acquainted with his work as a playwright, but I do want to flesh out a little his earlier stage career in case he was more prominent than I had thought. --Mantanmoreland 12:42, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
