Hello,
The Michael Tarbox Wikipedia page has been nominated for speedy deletion. The reason cited by the person nominating the page for deletion is “non-notable musician, only WP:Routine Coverage.”
The entry should not be deleted, for the following reasons: 1) The article does not meet the criteria for ROUTINE coverage described in Wikipedia’s guidelines; 2) Tarbox is a musician of note. His work has been widely reviewed in a variety of well known, and well respected, media outlets.
The article would be improved by providing citation, which it currently lacks, and perhaps from some rewrite. I hope to remedy that this week.
The Michael Tarbox Wikipedia entry should not deleted, for the following reasons:
With regard to the description of the Michael Tarbox page as ROUTINE:
The reader nominating the Michael Tarbox Wikipedia for deletion provides no detail to support his assertion that the text of the entry is ROUTINE in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines. I would ask that the reader provide specific citations from the page to support this assertion.
Here is Wikipedia’s criteria for what constitutes ROUTINE coverage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(events)#Routine_coverage):
“Routine news coverage of such things as announcements are not sufficient basis for an article. Planned coverage of scheduled events, especially when those involved in the event are also promoting it, is considered to be routine. Wedding announcements, sports scores, crime logs, and other items that tend to get an exemption from newsworthiness discussions should be considered routine. Routine events such as sports matches, film premieres, press conferences etc. may be better covered as part of another article, if at all. Run-of-the-mill events—common, everyday, ordinary items that do not stand out—are probably not notable. This is especially true of the brief, often light and amusing (for example bear-in-a-tree or local-person-wins-award), stories that frequently appear in the back pages of newspapers or near the end of nightly news broadcasts (“And finally” stories)”
From what I see, the text of the Michael Tarbox Wikipedia entry features only concrete, informative detail related to the artist’s discography and work. It does not fulfill Wikipedia’s description of what constitutes ROUTINE coverage insofar as: 1) It provides no coverage of scheduled events; 2) it does not promote an event; 3) it provides no public announcement in relation to recent or upcoming events; 4) it has no frivolous anecdotal content; 5) it features nothing that can be construed as light or amusing, or written to provide entertainment.
Wikipedia guidelines say that “Routine news coverage of such things as announcements are not sufficient basis for an article.” And indeed, the Michael Tarbox Wikipedia entry makes no announcement of any sort. It is not in any sense promotional or concerned with ephemera like wedding announcements or sports scores.
With regard to the assertion that Tarbox is a “non-notable musician”:
Wikipedia’s guidelines say that whether the subject of a Wikipedia entry is “Notable in the sense of being "famous", or "popular"—although not irrelevant—is secondary.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(events)#Routine_coverage)
While Michael Tarbox is not a household name, he is nevertheless a respected musician whose work has been profiled and reviewed in a variety of well known media outlets, including: NPR’s All Things Considered, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Chicago Reader, The Washington City Paper, The Boston Phoenix, The Onion, Mother Jones, and more. Please see links below.
The singular quality of Tarbox’s work is what led these platforms to deem it notable and worthy of review. That, and the fact that the reviews are well written and largely favorable, argues against the claim that Michael Tarbox is a “non-notable musican.”
