Michael Staines served as: a member of Patrick Pearse's staff, member of the Executive of the Irish Volunteers, Quartermaster General of the Irish Volunteers and IRA (until succeeded by Fintan Murphy summer 1920), Liaison Officer for Mayo and Galway during the Truce Period and first Commissioner of the Garda Síochána.
