An anon editor removed the quote from William F. Buckley to the effect that being the most prominent Socialist is America is akin to being "the tallest building in Topeka Kansas." I found this kind of an endearing quote and am inclined to restore it. Any discussion? TMS63112 16:45, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
-Was he ever a congressman? I have someone working in a U.S. congressman's office called Michael Harrington. --Rayc 02:53, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- No, he never held elected office. Carrite (talk) 07:46, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
There needs to be a disambiguation page for "Michael Harrington." In addition to this guy, and the Massachusetts politician, there is also a pro soccer player for Kansas City.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.4.186.6 (talk) 04:02, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Political Qualifications
The article only mentioned his qualification in English Literature, but did he get any political qualifications?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.159.9.152 (talk) 10:01, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- My recollection is that he did not have a degree in Political Science, only in English — even though he taught poli sci. I think that is why he taught where he did instead of at a major university. Carrite (talk) 07:46, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Photos?
I dropped a line to the (moribund?) DSA trying to get them to come up with a few usable images of Harrington for this page and for the DSA page. So far so bad. Can anyone help? I notice his wife died fairly recently so tracking down family for photos seems a tough go, given the commonness of the name...

DSA is definitely not moribund-it has actually grown recently, especially the youth section. I attended the national convention, which was held in Evanston, Illinois (just outside of Chicago) in November. As for Harrington photos, that is a good question. I could try to hunt some down, but I am not sure that is something the organization really has. Ripeugenedebs (talk) 02:30, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

- Michael Harrington → Michael Harrington (American writer)
- Michael Harrington (writer) → Michael Harrington (Canadian writer)
- Michael Harrington (disambiguation) → Michael Harrington
– There are five entries listed at the Michael Harrington (disambiguation) page with no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC specified, as of this writing. The American political writer does not appear to be more prominent than the other four men combined (one of them is named Mike Harrington and has no hatnote pointing to the dab page, as of this writing). Michael Harrington (writer) is an incomplete dab and should redirect to the Michael Harrington (disambiguation) page. Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 07:32, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, based on pageviews, Google hits and long term significance. Mike Harrington is also significant but is always known as Mike, so there is no title conflict; he could be added directly to the hatnote if necessary. Besides which, Michael Harrington is far, far better known as a "socialist" or "activist" than as a "writer". Station1 (talk) 23:08, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- Regarding the American Michael Harrington's status as a writer, the lead sentence of Wikipedia's own article on The Other America states that it "is Michael Harrington's best known and likely most influential book", thus confirming that the Canadian Michael Harrington was not the sole "(writer)". There is still no substantiation, however, that the American's notability was of such overriding proportion as to dwarf the other four entries on the dab page. Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 20:46, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
- That's a disingenuous argument. Anyone can write a book, and many people famous for other avenues often do, that doesn't make "writer" their primary occupation. As stated above, that's not what he was primarily known for, albeit The Other America was an important conduit of his socialist activism and a key part of his individual fame, but the book was not celebrated as a hallmark of prose, but for its non-fiction content and ideas. JesseRafe (talk) 13:54, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
- Not disingenuous at all. This nomination is focused both on primary topic and incomplete disambiguation. Even if the American Michael Harrington is retained as the primary topic, Michael Harrington (writer) still represents incomplete disambiguation. The Canadian Michael Harrington's lead sentence states that he was an "educator, writer, historian and broadcaster" and that he "served as editor-in-chief at The Telegram for the period 1959–1982". Since the American Michael Harrington was also a historian, a broadcaster and a newspaper editor, a major distinction for the Canadian would be his nationality. Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 01:34, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- Considering that anyone searching for this Michael Harrington would likely look at the plain name first, or, less likely, for "socialist" or "activist" but rarely for "writer", and that the Canadian writer attracts fewer than 1 hit per day, only about 1/2 of 1% of the readers of this article, it seems virtually no one is getting confused by the current titles. At most, a {{distinguish}} hatnote could be added to the Canadian, although even that isn't really necessary. Station1 (talk) 00:09, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- Since Michael Harrington (American writer) and Michael Harrington (Canadian writer) were both published writers, therefore Michael Harrington (writer) is, by definition, an incomplete disambiguation and should redirect to the Michael Harrington (disambiguation) page. Greater specificity within the proposed qualifier, Michael Harrington (Canadian writer), would indeed make a hatnote for the Canadian's entry superfluous per WP:NAMB. Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 01:28, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- I agree adding "Canadian" to the title would make a hatnote superfluous, but adding a hatnote would make "Canadian" in the title unnecessary. Disambiguation can be accomplished either way. It makes no difference, really, since few people are landing on Michael Harrington (writer) anyway, and virtually none of those few want the primary topic. My main concern is that the primary topic not be moved. Station1 (talk) 01:54, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- At this point, there may not be any !votes in support of moving the existing primary topic and even if one or two such !votes were to be cast, it would still likely close as no consensus for any changes to the American's article. As far as incomplete disambiguation is concerned, however, I do not see hatnotes being used as substitutes for, or on an equal footing with, more-specific qualifiers.
