01/12/08: Removed superfluous honorary title, added section on controversy associated with Elmore-Meegan, as reported in the Times (UK), and Irish Independent. This was incorporated into a new section, as it was considered especially notable given the level of media coverage received. Semajdoa81 (talk) 11:20, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has removed the material pertaining to the controversies. Also his title "Dr" still remains without any mention of the awarding bod - Knightsbridge University of Denmark, an unaccredited body whose website (which along with a p o box constitutes the whole company!) is currently off line. The whole article as it stands reads as a curriculum vitae. It does not even offer much description of his life. Rather, it is a list, (backed with references) of various occasions upon which the man has received plaudits from the great and the good. The issue with qualifications should be included. As should the financial irregularities that led to 97000 being returned to Irish Aid. As should the allegations of sexual abuse, because he lost a court case to silence a newspaper from publishing these allegations and they are now in the public domain. I am not a wiki writer myself, and do not know the format, but someoone really should get stuck into this article and knock it (and its subject, who is also possibly its author) off its pedestal.

This article badly needs a controversy section

[edit]

Ignoring the fact that this article currently reads like someone’s CV, it does not give any attention to the multiple news reports into allegations made against Meegan. A collection of news articles, from a variety of sources, have been gathered here http://dialogueireland.wordpress.com/category/charity-icross/

A quick google search will bring up many others, including from sources like The Irish Independent and The Irish Times. There are more than sufficient numbers of reliable sources who reported on these allegations to warrant inclusion.

I won’t be editing the article myself as I have an arguable conflict of interest in doing so. But I believe the above sources are sufficient sourcing material for any alterations needed to be made.--Themadhair (talk) 17:10, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Revisions to the Article

[edit]

I tried to rewrite the article and add citations. Before editing this article, I had never heard of Michael Meegan or Michael Elmore-Meegan (I am not sure which name he prefers to use or if he uses both). I have neither a positive nor negative view of him. My first thought was to question if he was notable enough for an article. In view of the number of Irish news reports about him and the high-profile he held in the Republic during the 2000s, he appears to pass that test.

After spending a few days with this article, there are a few points that I think need to be addressed?

  1. Why is he variously discribed as "Michael Meegan," "Michael Elmore-Meegan" (with Elmore-Meegan as a surname) or "Michael Elmore Meegan" (with "Elmore" as a middle name and "Meegan" as his surname)? Does he use the names alternately, did he change his name at some point, or is one a mistake? Specifically, did he start out as "Elmore-Meegan" and shorten his name to "Meegan" or did he begin as "Meegan" and change his surname to "Elmore-Meegan?"
  1. Some news accounts state that he attended Trinity College in Dublin, others reject that claim. Apparently his doctoral degree came from Knightsbridge University but did he receive an undergraduate degree from Trinity College?
  1. He published a number of articles in medical journals and received an honorary medical degree from the National University of Ireland but does he have academic training in medicine and, if so, where was it obtained?
  1. The early life and career sections need to be expanded. Most of the information available online is concerned with scandals. The early news accounts that explore what he did before the scandals hit are no longer available. Apparently, Elmore-Meegan is well-known in Ireland but it is not entirely clear to me what his reputation was (is) or how he became a "celebrity." It is important that the controversies not overshadow everything else, but this work probably requires someone familiar with Irish events.
  1. If someone can figure out his name or names, usage in the article may need to be standardized. It might also be necessary to move this article to a different name.

At this point, I am finished editing this article and do not anticipate returning. Hopefully, I leave it in better shape than I found it. Johnwilliammiller (talk) 08:46, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
