(Editor's Note: Recently in looking thru the bond volume of the Calexico Chronicle for the year 1968, 1 read a story about Mexicali Rose..."the authentic story' based on a letter written in by Jack B. Tenney, the composer... as this editorial is 22 years ago, for the younger generation who hadn't had the privilege of reading that story in the dim dim past, we reprint portions of it—telling the "authentic story "). Jack R. Tenney became an attorney and served a few years as State Senator..he wrote this letter on May 2. 1968, at a time when he was honored by the municipality of Mexicali. for his contribution to the renown of the border city.

Mexicali Rose, internationally famous song...

I was the leader of a 7 piece orchestra employed by Pablo Chee in the Imperial Cabaret the old flat iron building south of the tracks after entering Mexicali, sort of a night club downstairs. I had written quite a number of melodies while there including the music to the chorus of the Imperial, among which was the Mexicali Rose. Among the guess who came to the Imperial was a middle age woman, "Rose"...who reportedly operated a boarding house for railroad men in Brawley. She came to Mexicali about once a month with friends and always spent seme time at the Imperial which was very popular in those days. (The Owl had burned down and not yet been built,the boys in the orchestra referred to the woman as Mexicali Rose. One cold winter night late 1922 or early 1923, Rose and a few of her friends came to the Impeiial.lt was quite obvious they had been to other places in Mexicali.as Rose was sentimentaly ihtoxicated, and in tears during her short stay in the cafe because of the weather there wre very few guests In

the place and my musicians were passing the time sampellng Pablo's wares. After Roses’s friends had led her out of the place. Jack Halslip, neof my saxophone players, anounced he had the title to the melody I had written "Mexicali R05e"...1 tried It and it fitted the opening bar. Because Rose had been crying...! tried the next line, "stop crying". The bad weather and the title of a current popular song suggested the next line Til come back some sunny day”, the rest Just fell nturally in place. Helen Stone,the singer, liked the song so much that she put up the money for the first publication. I gave her half interest, and put her name on the number as the writer of the lyrics. It was a fine investment as we are still deriving royalties. I trus this brief account will meet your needs. P.S. Most accounts insist that I wrote the number at the ABW club on the Knabe. Although I worked at the ABW Club for about five years of and on; I did not write the tune at that club, it was at Pablo’s and the piano was a Chickerlng grand that I selected for Pablo when I opened the place. Yes, the article is much expanded, so thank you for your efforts. However, I've just done a big clean up/copy edit on the article - the formatting needed a lot of work doing on it.
