Requested move 2006

[edit]

Metropolian KatowiceUpper Silesian Metropolitan UnionRationale: Apparently this is the correct name. The article itself seems to be a copy of Katowice, only slightly adapted, and claims that this union of cities which doesn't even exist yet is actually a city of its own. And 'metropolian' is not an English word anyway. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Metropolian Katowice. ulayiti (talk) 16:36, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took it upon myself to move the article after all, and to strip any mention of "Metropolis Katowice" from the text. This reflects the editorial consensus of the Polish Wikipedia. I made sure the move did not create any double redirects. --Mareklug talk 01:03, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Support but as explained in today's correction, 'metropolis' (Polonism from 'metropolia') is incorrect. The correct word in English is metroplex. See American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (3rd ed. 1992), at p. 1137: 'metropolis': '1. A major city, especially the chief city of a country or region: Chicago, the metropolis of the Midwest.' 'metroplex': 'A large metropolitan region, especially one encompassing two or more cities and their surrounding suburbs - precisely what Metropolia Śląska is.83.31.215.105 (talk) 08:59, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Title

[edit]

The title seems to be a typo. It should be METROPOLITAN. unless this is based on Polish and strong argument is made, this should and will be moved. rmo13 13:44, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The title is completely wrong. The real name of this area in Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union (Górnośląski związek metropolitalny in polish). It's not a single city, but an union of several cities.

http://www.gzm.org.pl/eng/ official name is a bit different (Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia, MAUS) User:Xlkce

Completly wrong!

[edit]

First: This is not one city, but a union of cities. Second: It's only a project, so far.

!

[edit]

Metropolian Katowice is "city area" (Polish: obszar miejski). Proof of truth - http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Górnośląski_Związek_Metropolitalny.

restart

[edit]

Sadly, I must concur that the present version is a mispresentation at best (OR and h-word at worst..). I think the article should be virtually blanked and rebuild from scratch (on the pl.wiki article basis, say), the reason being that it does not describe correctly its subject. Observe that the article does not mention any sources - pl.wiki version does (in external links section). One could be surprised how different the subjects are... Actually, the present en.wiki text corresponds roughly to the old pl.wiki version which has been deleted (and replaced) on grounds of h-word rationale; disclaimer: at the beginning I was involved there. Any details at request. I'm willing to do what is necessary. Discussion and any constructive remarks are welcome. Best, --Beaumont (@) 11:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdrawiam. LUCPOL 12:17, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Too much bias towards Katowice; not enough info about other cities of the union

[edit]

POV violation: This article is unbalanced. Nearly all the detail is about Katowice, and mostly copies the Katowice article. This should be changed, to reflect the contribution of the other 13 cities of Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union. --Mareklug talk 01:07, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LUCPOL 10:11, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"It's OK now. I inserted more facts that are relevant from articles about other cities. There's nothing else I can do, because, like it or not, Katowice has definitely more facts about it, that are worth mentioning, roughly 30% more than other 13 cities all together. Please, chill. I thank User:Mareklug for removal POV in article. Now is OK. PS. I added section ==References== to article. LUCPOL 18:18, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

[edit]

Upper Silesian Metropolitan UnionMetropolitan Association of Upper Silesia — Page should be moved because, as the article itself states, this is the official English name for the organisation. Informal names can be given secondarily. For verification see: [1]. Is potentially controversial because move has been requested before, albeit to a different name. --Fliptank po (talk) 09:08, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The move does not seem to be well justified. The source given by you also uses the names "The Upper Silesian Metropolis" (on the maps) and "Metropolia Silesia" (in the title). So why not those names? Stan J. Klimas (talk) 12:26, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Simply because neither is the official name for the organisation. The sources you refer to have no officiality: "The Upper Silesian Metropolis" (as shown on the maps) is a loose geographical description of the area and "Metropolia Silesia" is a convenient brand representing the organisation, but is not the organisation itself, which is, after all, the topic of this article (I doubt, for example, that you would think it acceptable to create an article for McDonald's under the title "I'm lovin' it!"). Deriving the official English name from the site is easy: it is displayed on its address. So the move is justified, unless someone can reasonable show that the official English name is any different. Thanks --Fliptank po (talk) 12:47, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's been no serious opposition to moving this page, so page will be moved accordingly as soon as possible. Thanks. --Fliptank po (talk) 09:06, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Post-move

[edit]

Have moved the page and made some necessary edits to ensure proper continuity. This page really needs cleaning up; what should be a simple description of a union of 14 cities is described here as though it were already an actually existing geopolitical entity. To this end, I've changed some of the text to read "the area covering the MAUS" or "the area inhabited by"... because, despite some pro-MAUS NPOV editing in the text of the article itself, the union has no official capacity as of yet other than to co-ordinate efforts for co-operation. As the union develops (or not, as the case may be) the page can be updated and edited as necessary. Thanks --Fliptank po (talk) 13:47, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dead links, too-long section

[edit]

The first five (English-language) links are dead; most of the rest are Polish-language. While many of the bullet-list sections were too long, the "Notable residents" section is way too long; however, I don't have time to look up all the people to determine who really belongs there.--Miniapolis (talk) 13:20, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copied Information from the Katowice Article

[edit]

Can someone please start putting down distinguishable information for this Metropolitan Union? I mean, just compare the pages for New York City and New York metropolitan area. The information on both of those pages is largely distinguishable, though it may mention the same info, and even when it does it's in a original way, not carbon copied.

Article and association name

[edit]

Current association (Polish: związek metropolitalny „Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia”) created on 1 June 2017 [2] is separate and different entity from former Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, because it's created by different laws and regulations [3], [4] and has different members. You can also see this clearly in association official statement [5] (in Polish):

  • Zadaniem Górnośląskiego Związku Metropolitalnego było doprowadzenie do utworzenia metropolii w województwie śląskim. Obecnie cel ten został osiągnięty.
Dlatego GZM, po stworzeniu warunków do zainicjowania działalności Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii, w naturalny sposób kończy swoje funkcjonowanie.

English translation:

  • Task of Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union was leading to creation of metropolis in silesian voivodeship. Currently this aim has been achieved.
That's why GZM, after creating conditions for initiating existance of Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis, naturally ends it's functioning.

So you can see that from 1 June 2017 to 31 December 2017 there were actually two associations formed by different laws and having different sets of members.--83.10.97.147 (talk) 20:40, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You can also see this on pl.wiki:
|Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia
|Górnośląski Związek Metropolitalny

--83.10.97.147 (talk) 22:21, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Association named in Polish 'związek metropolitalny "Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia"' was created on 1 June 2017 by this polish government regulation: [6] and is formed with this parliamentary bill: [7] (both referred above), it also has 41 members and is not using name 'Silesia'. Former association named in Polish 'Górnośląski Związek Metropolitalny', the one which was using name 'Silesia', was one of many associations created by agreements between local authorities and existed from 13 February 2007 to end of 2017 [8]. It had only 14 members. These are two different associations created with different laws.--83.29.30.19 (talk) 20:26, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, it's become a little messy here on English Wikipedia, with one article conflating these two entities and not distinguishing between them well. Polish Wikipedia has two separate entries: pl:Górnośląski Związek Metropolitalny describes the former entity in past tense, while the current metropolis is described by pl:Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia. Now, I am not sure if there is need to have two articles for these things here on English Wikipedia, I think it would be confusing. I would rather rename this article to the new name and in the History section describe that the "metropolis" was preceded by the former "metropolitan association". I might do this, if I find a bit of time. Pear-on-willow (talk) 22:10, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted updates to the article

[edit]

I have attempted to update the article reflecting the new legal status of the project: the latest edit can be found here. User:R9tgokunks heavy-handedly reverted it, destroying at least an hour of work I did in my free time in good faith. I am not going to waste any more of my spare time on it, this sort of behaviour is exactly what put me off editing wikipedia before and I was naive hoping this time would be different. If you want to use any of this, it's there, if not then don't, I can't be bothered. Pear-on-willow (talk) 21:59, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
