AfC of Olaf Koch

[edit]

Dear all,

Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. As suggested by Robert_McClenon I would like to discuss the creation of an own article about the CEO of Metro AG, Olaf Koch, here on this talk page. I have suggested a draft within AfC here. I provided additional information on the books Olaf Koch wrote on the talk page of the draft.

I would be grateful if we could discuss here whether Olaf Koch should have an own article and whether my suggestion might be suitable.

@Otr500:, @Primefac: What do you think?

I am very much looking forward to your feedback.

Thank you in advance.

Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 08:39, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Marcos, sorry I did not get back to you at Draft talk:Olaf Koch#Draft improvements. Sometimes things slip through the cracks. On that page you produced several sources about the subjects books. The first one I checked was the buecher source that includes in the URL "shop". The site demands I set cookies and when I opted for "data protection" it wouldn't allow me to continue. The second was the same so I assume all are like that. "Proof" that a book exists is not the same as reviews of the books in reliable sources. If no other sources exists there is an issue that the ones provided are promotional. Munzinger.de relies heavily on company information and press releases for content which by proxy is primary sourcing. This does not advance notability. Reuters also uses press releases.
I realize you would like to get the paged published, and have clearly stated a WP:COI. The process sometimes is lengthy but "you can edit the draft" to make suggested improvements. The restrictions to editing is on published articles. I would like to note that creating a biography is subjected to more scrutiny than a regular article. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. The tips offered with the decline, "Improving your odds of a speedy review" include adding relevant and active WikiProjects at the top of the talk page for possible assistance. Sources can be good for "proving" something exists without advancing notability.
Does the subject deserve an article on Wikipedia? I submit "yes", from what I can see, but it also "must" be backed up by more than a Bloomberg profile page, so as to not be a business listing offered as a biography, that is essentially just a pseudo biography. We produce what others have written about a subject and not just what is listed about them. There has to be a difference between an article on a subject (biography) and the company they are associated with, or biographical content would be better suited in the company article. What has been written about "Olaf Koch"? (sources). Edit the draft as a BLP, using acceptable Reliable and independent sources, and I think it could b published. -- Otr500 (talk) 13:55, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Otr500, Thank you very much for getting back to me on this and please excuse that it took so long this time for my reply. The sources for the books are sources that proof that the books exist. As the books are technical literature (e.g. about Windows NT4, Windows 2000 or Lotus Notes) there are no reviews of the books in reliable sources that I know of. It was also never my goal to include the books individually in the article. However, I believe it is part of the biography of Olaf Koch that he wrote those. The Manager Magazin article I added in the Draft:Olaf Koch mentions that he wrote books by naming two exemplary titles ("MS-Excel 3.0" and "Lotus Notes - Anwendungen und Fallbeispiele"). I also now replaced the Munzinger, Bloomberg and Reuters sources with article from major German newspapers or magazines. These are all articles about Olaf Koch as a person - so not just about Metro AG as a company mentioning Olaf Koch. Some of these article are unfortunately hidden behind paywalls, which was the reason I didn't choose those from the beginning. Do you think these would work? I am looking forward to your feedback. Thank you very much and kind regards MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 12:51, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Otr500: Just wanted to check if you've seen this. Looking forward to your reply. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 16:07, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. To me a solution (suggestion) would be to use the draft and merge the three (including Metro AG and Metro Cash & Carry) together with the title Draft:Metro AG. When this is accepted for merging it would likely result in a C-class article that is more comprehensive and better sourced. The "Former operations" section of the Metro Cash & Carry could be converted to a paragraph form timeline.
I don't use sources behind WP:PAYWALLs but there is nothing wrong with it (See: Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Cost) as long as the source is reliable. A source should never be used if the person presenting it cannot access it. There will likely be a primary source that can back "proof" books exist anyway. The sources I looked at (mentioned above) I have a problem with when they want to track a person (set cookies) for advertising purposes or access is denied. -- Otr500 (talk) 02:37, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Otr500: Thanks for your reply. I am not sure I understand. Above you said that in your view Olaf Koch "deserves a article". I am bit confused on how a biographical article about a CEO can be merged into a company article - the information about the person in my view should be separated from the company; that's why biographies about executives exist right - just like Timotheus_Höttges or Joe_Kaeser? Regarding the sources: Of course we have the full articles and I pledge that the information in the Draft:Olaf Koch is backed by those sources (behind the paywalls). I understand that because they are behind paywalls and it is not easy to check. Therefore I had firstly suggested different sources like Reuters. Regarding the books: The article from Manager Magazin is the source for those - it mentions the books as follows: "Zwei Jahre später kehrte er dem Konzern den Rücken. Zu der Zeit hatte er bereits ein paar Bücher mit erregenden Titeln wie "MS-Excel 3.0" oder "Lotus Notes - Anwendungen und Fallbeispiele" verfasst. Er hatte gemerkt, dass es einen Markt für solche Ratgeber und Beratungsdienste gab und sich mit der Firma IT-Networks GmbH selbstständig gemacht." Translation: "Two years later, he turned his back on the company. At that time he had already written a few books with exciting titles such as "MS-Excel 3.0" or "Lotus Notes - Applications and Case Studies". He had noticed that there was a market for such guidelines and consulting services and set up his own company IT-Networks GmbH."
Looking forward to your reply. Best MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 09:06, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You have access to the sites behind paywalls right? -- Otr500 (talk) 14:00, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Otr500: Yes, of course. Best MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 14:17, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Otr500: I wanted to check whether you would be willing to further pursue the process regarding the Draft:Olaf Koch. What do you think? Looking forward hearing from you. Best MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 13:09, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Otr500, Robert McClenon: In coming across this article today in AfC, I think it should be OK to accept. I'm satisfied by the coverage on Koch in a variety of German dailies. Bkissin (talk) 20:04, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User:Bkissin - I've tagged the redirect for G6. I don't usually read comments about a review of a draft that I wrote nine months ago, let alone comments by another neutral reviewer. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:41, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to update article

[edit]

Dear all,

I would like to suggest an update of the information in the infobox (industry as well as the numbers). Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. I hope that uninvolved editors could review my suggestions and make changes if they find them appropriate.

Extended content

Suggested changes to the Infobox:

Industry

1. Please remove the current industry in the infobox:

"Retail"

2. Please add the following as industry to the infobox:

"Wholesale"

3. Using as the reference:

Please see article itself and reason below.

4. Reason for change being made:

As described in the article correctly Metro AG "operates business membership only cash and carry stores." Per further definition in the cash and carry article: "Cash and carry wholesale represents a type of operation within the wholesale sector." This is also backed by the Retail article stating that: "The term "retailer" is typically applied where a service provider fills the small orders of many individuals, who are end-users, rather than large orders of a small number of wholesale, corporate or government clientele"

Therefore, the industry should be "Wholsaling" instead of "Retail".

Chairman of the supervisory board

1. Please remove the current chairman of the supervisory board in the infobox:

"Franz Haniel (Chairman of supervisory board)"

2. Please add the following as chairman of the supervisory board to the infobox:

Added two more requests for edit above (Key people as well as Products). @DarthFlappy: Would you mind looking at this? Let me know if you have questions. Looking forward to your reply. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 15:30, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good @MarcosFernandezMETROAG:, feel free to add them yourself. DarthFlappy 19:11, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DarthFlappy: Thanks a lot. I changed the article according to the suggested edits above. One other thing: A user recently changed the following sentence in the section “Wholesale Operations” from “Belgium is the only country where non-business membership stores are operated, with 6 branches under the Makro brand. There are also 10 Metro stores for business members.“ to “Belgium is the only country where non-business membership stores are operated, with 6 branches under the Metro brand. There are also 10 Metro stores for business members.“ This was not correct. We do run two brands in Belgium: Makro and Metro. Here is the respective diff. In addition, we run 11 Metro stores in Belgium and not 10. Please also see here: Metro Belgium and Makro Belgium. Is it okay for you if we change this, as well? Thanks and best regards, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 13:52, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to add Otto Beisheim to history

[edit]

Dear all,

I would like to suggest to add some information on our founder Otto Beisheim to the article. Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. I hope that uninvolved editors could review my suggestions and make changes if they find them appropriate.

Extended content

Suggested changes to the History Section:

1964

1. Please add the following sentence in the second paragraph of the history section after "So they founded Metro-SB-Großmarkt GmbH & Co. KG with headquarters in Mülheim, later in Düsseldorf." :

Otto Beisheim, until 1964 authorized signatory of the company Stöcker & Reinshagen, became the sole managing director.

2. Using as the reference:

"Metro revolutionierte vor 50 Jahren den Einzelhandel". Der Westen (in German). 2014-10-26. Retrieved 2021-04-15.

3. Reason for change being made:

Otto Beisheim is considered the founder of Metro. I would therefore like to suggest to add some remarks to the history section - please also see the German Wikipedia article, from which I have copied the sentence and now have added a source.

1966-1968

1. Please remove the following sentence in the second paragraph of the history section:

In 1967, through a partnership with the Dutch company SHV Holdings (Steenkolen Handels-Vereeniging), a wholesale center opened in Utrecht, the Netherlands under the name makro.

2. Please add the following sentences to the history section:

In 1966, Otto Beisheim met Friedrich Wilhelm Lenz, Chairman of the Management Board of Franz Haniel & Cie. and was able to convince him into investing in Metro. In the course of the following reorganization Beisheim became a shareholder himself. From this point on, the founding family Schmidt-Ruthenbeck and the shareholders Beisheim and Haniel each held about one third of the shares. Under the sole leadership of Otto Beisheim, a rapid and very successful expansion of the Metro stores into the greater German and European area began in 1967 with the opening of the Metro stores in Godorf near Cologne, Hamburg, Munich and, after a connection with the Dutch company SHV Holdings, the first C&C wholesale store (brand: Makro) in the Netherlands, and in 1968 in Düsseldorf.

3. Using as the reference:

First sentence: "Die lukrative Wette auf ein Comeback der Metro". Die Welt (in German). 2018-09-02. Retrieved 2021-04-15.

Second and third sentence: "Otto Beisheim - der Metro-Gründer". Rheinische Post (in German). Retrieved 2021-04-15.

Last sentence: "Metro: Ein Konzern wird 50 Jahre alt". Westdeutsche Zeitung (in German). 2014-10-06. Retrieved 2021-04-15.

4. Reason for change being made:

Here I have summarized the information from the German article, including sources. Reasons is as stated above. This information explains how Beisheim became shareholder and CEO of Metro after which he shaped the history of Metro.

I am looking forward to your feedback. @DarthFlappy: would you be willing to look into this? Best regards, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 14:10, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MarcosFernandez: I'm afraid that the only citation you offered doesn't support most of the claims/assertions in the new text you are providing (the book synopsis does say that Beisheim is known to be one of the co-founders, but not much more). The main issue is that a book retailer is not a WP:RS. The article has other issues that I would suggest you look at; i.e., the History section pre-1998 hasn't got a single citation.
@Ferkjl: Thanks for your feedback. I reopened the request and added newspaper articles as respective sources. Is that okay like this? I will also look for sources for the history section pre-1998 in the coming weeks. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 14:48, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MarcosFernandezMETROAG: I see that there were additional requests below that were responded to, so I am unsure if this request is still valid. If there are still changes from this request that need to be considered, please open a new edit request at the bottom of this talk page. Thanks. Z1720 (talk) 17:13, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Correction of ticker symbol

[edit]

Dear all,

I noticed that the ticker symbol in the current article is wrong - please see respective request below. Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. I hope that uninvolved editors could review my suggestion and make the change.

infobox

1. Please remove the following ticker symbol (traded as):

FWBMEO

2. Please add the following ticker symbol (traded as):

FWBB4B

3. Reference:

https://www.boerse-frankfurt.de/equity/metro-ag-st

4. Reason for change being made:

B4B is the correct ticker symbol for the stock of Metro AG. MEO used to be the symbol before the transformation and the split-off of Media Markt Saturn (today Ceconomy).

Thank you very much in advance for the correction. Best regards, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 14:50, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greatly appreciate the update. Let me know if there are any questions. @Ferkjl and DarthFlappy: would you be willing to look into this? Best regards, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 12:26, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ferkjl and DarthFlappy: hi, just wanted to make sure that you've seen this. One more topic: the link in the info box behind the stock symbol is now linking to search results, but we could also use a direct link: https://www.boerse-frankfurt.de/equity/metro-ag-st - what do you think? Greatly appreciate your help with this. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 10:38, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I will not be answering this one. I've been taking a break from Wikipedia in general and and answering COI requests in particular. I wish the the backlog was not so long!
Hi @DarthFlappy: Thank you for your feedback. Dear @Ferkjl, Otr500, Primefac, and Robert McClenon: would you be so kind to have a look at this update request? What do you think? Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 08:16, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dear MarcosFernandezMETROAG Thanks for the pink, but I am afraid I cannot help. I change of leadership does need to be reflected. I have issues beyond any concerns of COI. After the ping, I glanced at the article and references. Aside from sites wanting me to set cookies to continue, which might only be an issue with me, there are more than a couple of dead links (site can't be reached and 404 errors) and the use of mainly primary sources is a concern. On a quick glance, there are six dead links (Metro, Reuters, and hbc), that could just be link rot, but your request for edits only use MetroAG. Presently there is possibly more than 30% primary sourcing which is excessive.
I have backed off a little from WP:AFD's (was actually going to visit today and saw this) because my record might indicate I was becoming a little too good. I feel I am an "inclusionist by sources" not a deletionist. In other words, if sources (according to our policies and guidelines that exclude primary sources) show notability, we should have an article. Sourcing was a concern I mentioned almost a year ago (see above) and here we are.
While the use of primary sources on a company about itself can be acceptable it is always better to provide other sources that should be available considering the size of the company. Too many company sources (press releases) are problematic (see; WP:NEWSORG) regarding the reputation for fact-checking, and the level of independence from the topic.
With your involvement, I consider it paramount that non-primary sources be provided and that the dead link issues be resolved because notability could still be argued at AFD. Thank you, -- Otr500 (talk) 14:20, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have had no involvement with this article. I have not checked the sourcing, and so cannot say that I have verified the change, but a change in management names is neutral. I have no further opinion. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:18, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done Changes looked uncontroversial. Primary sources are reliable for this kind of information. MarcosFernandezMETROAG please inspect whether I have correctly implemented the requested changes. JBchrch talk 19:13, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JBchrch, Thank you very much for the edit. With your edit you now also removed Andrea Euenheim (CHRO and Labour Director), Eric Poirier (COO—Hospitality Cluster) and Jürgen Steinemann (Chairman of supervisory board). Would it make sense to put them back in?
In addition, I wonder whether we could replace the link under "traded as" in the infobox as it currently directs to a search result. The direct link would be this one: https://www.boerse-frankfurt.de/equity/metro-ag-st
What do you think? Thanks again for your help! Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 10:12, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MarcosFernandezMETROAG, sorry I did not understand that these members were meant to stay. However, please note that the parameter related to "Key people" is generally limited to 2, at best 3 people, so we are already somewhat overboard. But if you want me to switch some members, I can do that. The change regarding the link has been  Done. JBchrch talk 11:40, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JBchrch, Understood, thank you. In this case I would like to suggest to only list our CEO, Steffen Greubel, as well as Jürgen Steinemann as our Chairman of the supervisory board. What do you think? Thanks for the link change! Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 12:54, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Z1720: Thanks for your note above. I just opened this new request as the changes suggested were not looked at after my latest update. Looking forward to your feedback. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 08:41, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion/Update Wholesale Operations

[edit]

Dear all,

I wanted to discuss whether a deletion of the whole "Wholesale Operations" section would make sense. Why? Because today with a look on our website and the respective country websites the information on our stores can easily be found and the list here on Wikipedia seems often outdated: We open new stores and others may get closed. What do you think?

If it is believed that the section is still valuable to the reader, I would like to suggest to make the following updates:

Suggestion section controversies

[edit]

Dear all,

I would like to suggest to add information and change the wording slightly to better reflect NPOV. Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. I hope that uninvolved editors could review my suggestions and make changes if they find them appropriate.

Extended content

Suggested changes to the section Controversies:

1. Please delete the following sentence:

"Unlike most of its Western competitors, MetroAG has been slow to announce any divestments or scaling back of its operations in Russia, drawing criticism."

2. Please add the following sentences:

"Unlike most of its Western competitors, Metro AG announced to keep its business in Russia open, which drew criticism. The company said that the decision was made after careful internal evaluation and based on its responsibility to its 10,000 colleagues in Russia."

3. Using as the reference:

"Wholesaler Metro Condemns Attack In Ukraine, Keeps Russian Operations Open". European Supermarket Magazine. 2022-03-14. Retrieved 2022-03-15.

4. Reason for change being made:

The current wording (especially "been slow to announce any divestments or scaling back of its operations in Russia") is not reflected in the sources and seems to be the interpretation of the author. Furthermore, the company's point of view is not integrated, which would make it a more neutral statement. NPOV states "Articles must not take sides, but should explain the sides, fairly and without editorial bias."

I greatly appreciate if an independent author could support with this request. Let me know if you have any questions. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 16:58, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to update (financial figures)

[edit]

Dear all,

I would like to suggest an update of financial figures after the publication of the Annual Report 2022/2023. Please note that I have a financial conflict of interest as I am working in the communications department of Metro AG. I hope that uninvolved editors could review my suggestions and make changes if they find them appropriate.

Thank you very much, @Lewcm. I just notices that for revenue and employees the year in brackets in the info box is still 2021/22 instead of 2022/23. Greatly appreciate your support. Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 10:18, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed sorry! Thanks, Lewcm Talk to me! 11:13, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lewcm, Sorry to bother you. Would it be possible to change in the info box for 'Number of employees' the year in brackets to 2022/23? Thanks, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 16:24, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No need to apologise! I’m so sorry for missing quite a bit in this one, should be fixed now :) Lewcm Talk to me! 17:52, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All fine now. Thank you very much! Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 08:26, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the info box has recently appeared the information "Number of locations" with "674 (2022)". Would it be possible to update the figure here as well to "625 (2023)", like in the introduction of the article? Best, MarcosFernandezMETROAG (talk) 11:12, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
