Carcinogenic effects? Really?

[edit]

"The induction of CYP1A1 indicates a potential interaction between kava or kavalactones and CYP1A1-mediated chemical carcinogenesis."

That's the only part of the abstract that connects the induction of 1A1 with an interaction between kava and carcinogenesis. In vitro studies on mice have found conflicting results. I think that statement should be re-worded, or taken out completely. From the sound of it, drinking kava will create the most carcinogenic substance know to mankind to start wreaking havoc in your body because ONE of the kavalactones induces CYP1A1 (not mentioning the opposing effects that other k-lactones possess, and the studies showing kava is actually chemoprotective).

Oral exposure to benzo[a]pyrene in the mouse: detoxication by inducible cytochrome P450 is more important than metabolic activation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.171.22.129 (talk) 18:54, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Needs Heavy Deletion

[edit]

I don't know who wrote this page, but it reads like some elaborate, speculative pet theory:

1) CYP1A1 is induced by Gingko, Vitamin A, and many other substrates - big whoop - why isn't this whole section reproduced there? 2) CYP1A1 is not the only enzyme responsible for converting polycyclic aromatics (knockout mice still oxidize them, and you have to knock out a bunch of P450 isozymes before you get accumulation) 3) There is no evidence that CYP1A1 induction is carcinogenic or that CYP1A1 knokout is protective

I'm going to clean it up. If anyone is bothered, please explain why this is relevant.--MedDogg (talk) 02:55, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
