History and Naming

Would it be possible to add when this was discovered and named in particular?

The reason I ask is because it was a bit difficult for me to memorize the name; the abbreviation is "MECP2" but the expanded name is "Methyl CpG-binding domain protein 2", as wikipedia states. But the "domain" part is not part of the abbreviation, which confused me.
