What is a metafile?
[edit]To my best knowledge, a metafile is a file that stores a vector graphics format (e.g. CGM, WMF, EMF, ...). It is called a metafile, because it acts like graphics device, the same program calls that are used for a graphical device can be directed to a metafile to be recorded there - and can be later played from the metafile against a device.
