Is Bishop a "Rank"?

The phrase "until his elevation to the rank of Bishop in 1931" sounds very odd and out of place. Perhaps "... until his elevation to the episcopate in 1931"? or simply "... until he was made a bishop in 1931"?--Jpacobb (talk) 19:55, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
