Notability
[edit]First of all, don't worry about the Notability tag. It puts the article in a category which invites other editors to come improve it. There are editors who like to add wikilinks, to improve the writing style, and so on. They look in a category to choose an article to improve.
WP:ORG defines the primary criterion for an organization's notability. It is not specific about numbers of references, but it does look for multiple, independent references in (e.g.) newspapers. The Stockport Council's web site is a useful reference but it would be better if you could find stories in newspapers or magazines - e.g. a story about the construction or grand opening. As the 'town' centre i would disagree with the notablility tag, however, the list of shops reads more like an advert than a wiki entry. Suggest removing those.
No mention is made of the history, Princess street was the main shopping street unti Merseyway was created. There was a major development about 15 years ago that saw upper walkways removed in the area near to the big Co-Op (Chestergate at one point)GazMan7 (talk) 15:53, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice GazMan7, i am preceding to edit this section accordingly so it is in cited prose and does not read as an advert, you want to help with the edit?, i have also started a history section but at the moment am struggling to find sources for it except the basics that it was opened in 1965 and refurbished in 1995, James50567 (talk) 22:39, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
As a Stockport resident who returned after quite a time living away, what I'd be interested in - I suspect it ties into the note about the place changing ownership in 2009 - is an account of whatever happened to the multi-faced tower clock above the car-park, which was impressively large and a local landmark visible from quite a long way away accross Stockport and even South Manchester - it could be distinguished from the upper stories of the Fujitsu Building in Gorton with the naked eye, for instance. This was taken down without a word of explanation, and in its way is a much-missed feature of the local landscape.86.174.253.239 (talk) 08:02, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Building upon the work of the earlier copyeditors I have had a go with the page too but accept it struggles to be notable. Ed1964 (talk) 13:17, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
Opening dates
[edit]I feel sure that the date of opening given as 1965 is wrong. It was certainly still under construction as late as 1970 and would have been opened in the early 1970s. The original Merseyway Road, on top of which the shopping centre was built, was opened in 1940 and was still open to traffic in the late 1960s. - there's some images [[1]] showing it open in 1969. One shows some scafolding in place so maybe some construction continued until later. There's also images of construction in 1965 not looking too finished.JMiall₰ 09:50, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
