Could somebody explain the connection between the Toxteth riots and the Campaign? As far as I'm aware, water quality wasn't noted a contributory factor to the riots, and it all seems rather tenuous. If no explanation is provided, I will remove the remark. --RFBailey20:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's tenuous, but I can see what the original writer was getting at. Michael Hestletine and team were parachuted-in to address the underlying reasons for the riots, and the general feeling of gloom, despair and famine of aspiration etc that was stalking Liverpool during the Thatcher era (which I remember only too well). He tackled his task with enthusiasm, and I have heard many people say that the only reason that there are not statues of him all over Liverpool is that he came from the 'wrong' political party as far as a majority of Liverpudlians were concerned. I'll have a go at rewording it to the effect that 'The quality of the river was addressed along with other issues by the task force sent in after the Toxteth riots', or something like that.
