False claim of disbandment
[edit]The group working to restore this line has not disbanded: the website given as a reference is controlled by a former member of the group who was removed, for reasons I am not at liberty to discuss. The project remains alive and well, and a new website will appear soon (once the old one has been taken down). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.3.254.47 (talk) 03:05, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
Until you can provide physical proof i.e. a reliable news article or website than the current reference has to stay, regardless if that website is owned by the director of the current/former Meon Valley Railway Restoration Society. user:zeoace — Preceding undated comment added 18:38, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Improvement drive
[edit]This article is in need of improvement. There should be plenty of material available to do this.
Problems I can see -
- Vast swathes of unreferenced text -
- Background - no references.
- Design - no references.
- Construction - no references.
- Early History - no references.
- Southern Railway - no references.
- Wartime - one reference, apparently only covers location of photograph
- Post-war and British Railways - no references.
- Gradual closure - no references.
- Post-closure - no references.
- Today - only last para referenced. Title means little, should probably be a continuation of Post-closure.
- Made a continuation of Post-closure
- Possibility of re-opening - only last para referenced. Possibly needs renaming to "Re-opening proposals".
- Analysis - no references.
- Trivia - no references, trivia sections are discouraged.
- Other plans for a Meon Valley Railway - no references, should be merged into Background.
- Merged into Background and Wartime sections as appropriate
- Gallery - discouraged, open to discussion re retention/deletion.
- Non neutral language, expression of opinions etc.
As the railway was so late in its construction, and there are plenty of books covering it. The above problems should be fixable. The Times and Hansard should give details re the planning and construction of the line.

- Those authored or co-authored by Kevin Robertson should be best (Disclaimer: I've met him several times, and once went to his house at Corhampton, about half a mile from the former Meon Valley line, and his garage is full of railway books). --Redrose64 (talk) 20:31, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- I've got Stone, and the three-part series by Robertson. If there are any others missing, feel free to add them. Mjroots (talk) 20:36, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Merge discussion
[edit]I really don't think that we need two articles, Meon Valley Railway and Meon Valley Railway Line. The second one is about a cycle route that follows the trackbed of the former railway line, it could easily be a section within the first one. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- Alternatively, we could rename the article to Meon Valley Railway Trail, which matches the Commons category for it. Mjroots (talk) 21:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- It gets worse, there's also Meon Valley Trail (cycle trail). Mjroots (talk) 07:35, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- I've tagged Meon Valley Trail (cycle trail) also. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:25, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Meon Valley Trail (cycle trail) is a completely different on-road route. Nick Austin (talk) 22:25, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- I agree about the merger, I've not understood why we have 2 articles, the trail is basically what became of the line and should be either listed under the route today or perhaps it's own sub-title on the Meon Valley Railway page. Zeoace (talk) 10:48, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

1970 Meon Tunnel portal photos – captions transposed
[edit]I believe that the captions for the two JohnRagla photos of the two portals of Meon Tunnel in 1970 are transposed. From my own visits to Meon Tunnel's portals in 1993 and 2012, what he refers to as the South portal is in fact the North. My 1993 photo (and by this time the South portal had a heap of earth in front of it, as now, so this is very definitely the North portal) reveals the same patterns in the brickwork as well as the profile of the cutting. 81.155.158.4 (talk) 20:43, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- Can you make your photos available for viewing? It is pretty much impossible for anyone to make a judgment without seeing other photos. I have examined the shadows and the likely position of the sun in the sky in the photos in the article, but without a time or a date it is difficult to draw any firm conclusions.
