Name etymology i think the name comes from mne - water & duta - red > red water. don't understand the translation "where the waters meet." tpk (talk) 14:28, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

mní - water, dúta - (shiny-) red

"the Dakota word “mdo-te”, meaning “meeting of the waters” was the origin of the name Mendota." Mendota Heights history - mníčiyA , omníčiye - meeting, council, assembly

"The name Mendota, given to this lake in 1849 by Frank Hudson, a Madison surveyor, is a Sioux Indian name meaning "the mouth of the river"." digicoll.library.wisc.edu/.../MENDHIST.BROWN - History of the Lake Mendota Region by Charles E. Brown, Director, State Historical Museum, pp 13-16, in Bean, Earnest F., Lake Mendota : origin and history (1936)

wičhái - human mouth / iyóȟloke - mouth of a stream

even though the language is Dakota, i cite the online lakota words & definitions from lakotadictionary.org

The article says that "Mendota" means the joining of rivers. The historical plaque says it meanes "the mouth of a river". Are both correct?
