Wording
[edit]@PericlesofAthens: Given what we know about Memnon, would it be more appropriate to refer to him, such as it in the lede, as an "(Achaemenid) Persian general of Greek origin" or a "Greek in the service of the Achaemenid Empire"? Curious about your opinion. - LouisAragon (talk) 17:51, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
- Well, he was born in Rhodes, outside of the Achaemenid Empire, and he or his family chose to live under Persian dominion and he worked in their service for most of his life. Whether or not that makes him an Achaemenid person is up for debate, regardless of his Greek ethnicity. There were obviously Ionian Greeks who lived in the Persian Empire and fought on their side against the mainland Greeks and other Greeks of the Aegean region. I think the wording is fine, simply because he was not born in Achaemenid territory. People viewed citizenship in a Greek polis very different from being subjects of a Persian king of kings, who delegated authority to feudal satraps. I think our modern connotations about his nationality are a bit anachronistic. It's like arguing if he should be considered a Greek or Turkish citizen, of either the Hellenic Republic or the Republic of Turkey, respectively. Pericles of AthensTalk 19:11, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
- @PericlesofAthens: My thoughts exactly. Thank you for your thorough response. - LouisAragon (talk) 22:58, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
